Chapter 6 - The Trap SprungI didn't use the hallway. I bolted toward the private balcony overlooking the rear courtyard, slid open the glass door, and slipped out into the cold night air.

Below me, a sheer ten-foot drop led down to the soft mulch of the rose garden. Without hesitating, I climbed over the wrought-iron railing, dropped hard onto the mulch, rolled to absorb the impact, and scrambled low through the shadows toward the utility gate.

Behind me, the upstairs study window flew open.

“Who’s down there?!” Richard’s furious voice roared into the night.

I pushed through the service gate, sprinted down the dark suburban street, and didn't stop running until I threw myself into the driver’s seat of my car, locking the doors with shaking hands.
