The security gates of the temporary child protective services facility opened wide.
A small figure burst through the double doors, sprinting down the concrete walkway as fast as his legs could carry him.
“Mom!”
Twelve-year-old Noah collided straight into my arms, burying his face in my coat as we both tumbled into a tight, tearful embrace.
“You’re safe, sweetheart,” I whispered, kissing the top of his head as tears of pure relief streamed down my cheeks. “It’s over. Grandpa can never hurt us again.”
Noah pulled back, looking up at me with wide, tear-filled eyes, a proud, shaky smile breaking across his face.
“Did Dad’s system work?”
I smiled, pulling the USB drive from my pocket and holding it up where he could see it.
“Better than we ever could have imagined, Noah. Your father just saved us both.”
