Chapter 2 - THE $0 BALANCE SHOCK

When a Millionaire Realizes He Can't Even Pay for His Housekeeper's UberWilliam stared at his phone screen in disbelief. He had tried to order a ride to his office. Declined. He tried his corporate Amex. Declined. He tried his secondary Visa. Declined.

He was a prisoner in his own luxury home.

He walked out to the garage, determined to drive his Porsche 911 Carrera. He pressed the key fob. The headlights didn't flash. He unlocked the door manually, climbed inside, and pressed the engine start button. The dashboard lit up with a single, mocking message:

VEHICLE LOCATOR ACTIVE - REPOSSESSION IN PROGRESS

"No," William whispered, slamming his hands against the leather steering wheel. "No, no, no!"

Sarah had leased the vehicle through the corporate account. Since the corporate account was frozen under suspicion of fraud, the leasing company had already initiated remote immobilization. She hadn't just taken his child; she had stripped away every single luxury that defined his identity.

Left with no other choice, William walked.

He walked through the chilly San Francisco morning, the fog rolling over the hills, biting through his thin linen shirt—the shirt he had chosen specifically to look casually affluent upon his return. People passed him, rushing to their high-powered tech jobs, completely unaware that the man walking among them in dirty designer loafers was currently worth less than the coffee they held in their hands.

When he finally arrived at the offices of Vance & Associates in Jackson Square, he was sweating and out of breath. The glass double doors of his firm bore his name in sleek, matte-black lettering.

This was his sanctuary. Here, he was a god. Here, his word was law.

He pushed the doors open, expecting his receptionist, Chloe (not to be confused with his mistress, Khloe, though the similarity in names now felt like a sick joke), to greet him with a hot espresso.

Instead, he found the lobby empty. The lights were dimmed.

In the conference room, three of his senior partners were huddled around a speakerphone. When they saw William stand in the doorway, their conversations died instantly.

"William," Marcus, his oldest partner and once a close friend, said. He didn't stand up to shake William's hand. "You're back."

"Why are the lights off? Why is the receptionist not at her desk? What is going on here?" William demanded, trying to project an authority he no longer felt.

Marcus sighed, rubbing his temples. He pushed a tablet across the glass table.

"Sarah’s lawyers delivered a forensic audit of our payroll to the board of directors on Monday," Marcus said. "You’ve been using company funds to pay for Khloe’s apartment in Marina District. You listed her as a 'Senior Design Consultant.' William, she doesn’t even have a college degree. She has an associate’s in hospitality."

William felt the blood drain from his face. "It was a temporary arrangement... a tax write-off..."

"It’s embezzlement, William," Marcus snapped, his voice rising. "And because she used our corporate server to access her personal email, the forensic team has every single text, email, and photo you sent her while you were supposedly on 'creative leave' in Cabo. The board has voted. You are being placed on unpaid administrative leave effective immediately, pending a full internal investigation."

"You can't suspend me!" William yelled. "My name is on the door!"

"And we are already working on taking it down," Marcus replied coldly. "You have ten minutes to clear out your desk. After that, security will escort you out."
