Chapter 8 - THE ULTIMATE RECKONING

From San Francisco Elite to a Warning Label for Cheating HusbandsOne year later.
The Marina District was bustling with its usual crowd of young professionals and wealthy families.
At a small cafe near the marina, William Vance sat at an outdoor table, wearing a faded polo shirt and jeans. He looked older, his face lined with the permanent marks of regret. He was no longer an architect; he was a freelance draftsman, drawing remodel plans for local contractors, barely making enough to cover his child support payments.
He had signed the papers. He had no choice.
His name had been stripped from the glass doors of Vance & Associates, replaced by Sterling & Associates Design Group. Sarah had sold her controlling share to a larger firm, making a fortune and ensuring she would never have to work another day in her life if she didn't want to.
William picked up his phone, opening his social media feed. He didn't follow Khloe anymore—she had blocked him long ago—but he did look at Sarah’s public profile.
There was a new photo posted just an hour ago.
It was a sunny day at Golden Gate Park. A beautiful, healthy one-year-old boy with curly brown hair was laughing, taking his first steps on the grass. Beside him, Sarah was smiling, holding his tiny hands, looking happier than William had ever seen her during their marriage.
The caption read:
One year of breathing easy. One year of pure joy. Happy birthday, Leo.
William stared at the photo for a long time. His son was walking, and he wasn't there to see it. He had missed the first smile, the first tooth, the first step. All because of a ten-day trip to Cabo and a bouquet of champagne roses.
He looked down at the table. A single, dry leaf had fallen from the oak tree above, resting near his coffee cup.
He touched it, the dry texture reminding him of those twelve pale champagne stems wrapped in cream paper, tied with a silk ribbon.
