Chapter 7 - THE FACE-TO-FACE CONFRONTATION

Meeting the Woman Who Destroyed Me Without Shedding a Single TearThe mediation room at Sterling & Associates was silent.
William sat on one side of the mahogany table, represented by a public defender he had been forced to retain because he couldn't afford a private attorney. He looked terrible—his suit was unpressed, his hair unkempt.
On the other side sat Sarah.
She looked radiant. Her skin was glowing, her hair styled in a chic bob. She wore a tailored cream blazer that screamed quiet confidence. There was no trace of the exhausted, postpartum woman he had left in San Francisco three weeks ago. She looked like a woman who had finally stepped out of a dark shadow and into the light.
"Sarah," William said, his voice trembling. "Please. Can we just talk? Without the lawyers?"
Sarah looked at him. Her eyes were calm, clear, and completely devoid of warmth.
"There is nothing to talk about, William," she said. "The terms are in front of you."
"You're destroying my life!" William cried, leaning forward. "You took my firm! You took my son! You left me with nothing!"
"I took nothing that you didn't willingly give away," Sarah replied softly. "You gave away your firm when you used its funds to pay for your mistress. You gave away your son when you chose to turn your phone off while he was in the NICU. I simply collected the debris you left behind."
"I made a mistake!" William pleaded, tears streaming down his face. "I was stressed! The pressure of the business, the baby... I panicked! I went to Cabo to clear my head!"
"You went to Cabo to escape your responsibilities," Sarah corrected. "And you did. Quite successfully. For ten days, you had no wife, no sick baby, and no worries. Now, that escape is permanent. I am granting you the exact life you wanted: a life without us."
William’s lawyer nudged him, whispering that he should remain quiet, but William ignored him.
"I want to see my son, Sarah. He’s my blood. You can't keep him from me in a supervised facility!"
"You will see him when you prove you can be a father," Sarah said, her voice finally hardening. "When you can show me that you care more about his breathing than your own comfort. Until then, the state of California agrees with me: you are a flight risk and an emotional hazard."
She stood up, smoothing her skirt.

"Sign the papers, William. Or we go to trial. And if we go to trial, I will introduce the forensic analysis of your corporate accounts to the District Attorney. Embezzlement carries a prison sentence of up to five years. I think supervised visitation is a much better deal, don't you?"
She walked out of the room, leaving her attorney to finish the paperwork.
