Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW PAYOUT

Victor’s face twitched. He quickly pressed the button on his desk intercom, but all that came out was static. The other board members began to shrink back in their chairs, realizing they were trapped forty floors in the air with a living legend.
"What do you want, Marcus?" Victor growled, lowering the gun slightly, realizing a firefight in this room meant instant death. "You came here to execute us? You're a decorated hero. You won't murder cold-bloodedly."
"Murder?" Marcus let out a soft, humorless laugh. "No, Victor. I don't murder criminals. I destroy them."
Marcus threw a small black USB drive onto the center of the boardroom table. It slid smoothly across the wood, stopping right in front of Victor.
"What is this?" Victor demanded.
"That," Marcus said, leaning his hip against the table, "is the complete ledger of Operation Ironclad. Every bribe paid to that senator sitting to your left. Every shell company used by the media mogul on your right. And every illegal weapon shipment you funneled through Pendelton Capital over the last decade."
The senator’s face went completely red, then white. "How did you get access to those files?! The encryption was unhackable!"
"Nothing is unhackable when the man who designed the encryption system comes back to claim it," Marcus replied, his eyes narrowing. "You thought I lost everything when my arm was blown off in Kunduz. You thought I was broken, discarded, living off a meager pension. You forgot one minor detail."
Marcus took a step closer to Victor, the red lighting casting long, terrifying shadows across his battle-scarred face.
"I didn't lose my arm in a military operation, Victor. I lost my arm saving you from the cartel ten years ago. And while I lay in a military hospital, you forged my signature, stole my equity in Pendelton Capital, and turned my father's legacy into a criminal cartel."
Victor sneered, desperation making him reckless. "Your father was weak! He built a bank that cared about ethics! I built an empire that controls the city! You can't stop this, Marcus. Even if you release those files, we own the judges. We own the media. By tomorrow morning, the news will report that you're a mentally unstable veteran who attacked a corporate office!"
Marcus looked at his watch. The second hand ticked down to the top of the hour.
"Look at the news right now," Marcus said quietly.
One of the board members frantically pulled out his tablet. His eyes widened in absolute horror. "Victor... look at this."
Every major news outlet, every social media feed, and every financial stream in the world was broadcasting the contents of the USB drive in real-time. The video of Arthur Pendelton throwing the gold coin had gone so viral that when the leaked files hit the web, over two hundred million people were actively watching the story unfold.
The public rage was unstoppable. Stock values for Pendelton Capital were plummeting into a black hole. Within three minutes, the bank lost 85% of its market valuation.

"You didn't just ruin us..." Victor whispered, the gun slipping from his fingers and clattering to the floor. "You destroyed the entire institution."
"I didn't destroy it," Marcus corrected him. "I liquidated it."
