Chapter 10 - The MasterpieceSix months later.

Florence, Italy.

The afternoon sun streamed through the towering arched windows of the Medici Chapel, casting golden shafts of light across ancient stone floors and centuries-old plaster. High up on the wooden scaffolding, Elena Vale stood with a fine-tipped restoration brush in her hand, her eyes locked on the microscopic layers of pigment she was carefully coaxing back to life.

For months, the project had been a triumph. The academic world was hailing her discovery as the artistic renaissance of the decade, and art historians from across Europe flocked to study her methodology.

Yet, despite the acclaim, the cameras, and the applause, her mind often drifted across the Atlantic.

She stepped back from the fresco, wiping a smudge of mineral blue from her cheek with the back of her wrist, and turned to look down at the quiet courtyard below the chapel entrance.

Parked against the ancient cobblestone curb was a nondescript, matte-black town car.

A familiar figure stood leaning against the passenger door, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, holding a crystal glass half-filled with amber liquor. He looked up, his gray eyes piercing the distance with absolute, unshakeable calm, catching her gaze instantly through the open chapel window.

He didn't wave. He didn't smile.

He simply raised his glass in a silent, quiet toast.

Elena felt a slow, breathtaking smile spread across her face. The canvas before her was a masterpiece restored from the shadows of history—but as she turned and began descending the scaffolding to meet him, she knew the true masterpiece was the life she had built from the ashes.
