Chapter 6 - The Confession in the DarkUpstairs in the east suite, the sound of the gunshot had echoed faintly through the thick walls, sounding like a distant clap of thunder.

Elena flinched, pressing her back against the tall, arched window overlooking the churning, stormy lake. Her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. For two years, Grant had held all the cards, wielding fear like a leash. To hear him screaming in terror downstairs, utterly helpless, felt surreal—like a fever dream she was afraid to wake up from.

The heavy oak door of the suite clicked open.

Footsteps crossed the polished wooden floor. Heavy, measured, unhurried.

Elena turned slowly, her breath catching in her throat.

Vincent stood in the doorway. His sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, revealing taut, corded muscle and a faint, pale scar across his left wrist. There was no blood on him, no sign of struggle, save for a single dark lock of hair falling across his forehead.

“Is it... is it over?” she whispered, her voice trembling.

“It’s over,” Vincent said quietly, walking toward her. “Grant Mercer is currently on his way to a holding facility managed by individuals who take a very dim view of men who assault women. By morning, his assets will be frozen, his board seats revoked, and his name erased from every corporate registry in the state.”

Elena stared at him, tears finally breaking free, spilling hot and fast down her cheeks. She didn't try to wipe them away. For the first time in two years, she didn't feel the need to look composed, or strong, or careful.

“You destroyed him,” she murmured, the weight of it settling over her. “Just like that.”

“I didn't destroy him, Elena,” Vincent corrected softly, stopping just a foot away from her. “I simply stopped protecting him from his own nature. He built his own cage. I just locked the door.”

He reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping her jawline, his thumb lightly brushing away a tear beneath her eye. The touch was so tender, so completely at odds with the lethal underworld boss who had just dismantled a man’s entire existence without blinking.

Elena shivered, her gaze locking onto his piercing gray eyes. “Why?” she asked again, her voice breaking on the syllable. “Why go to all this trouble for someone you barely know?”

Vincent’s thumb stroked her cheekbone, his gaze deepening. “Who told you I barely know you?”

She blinked, confused. “We’ve never met. Before tonight—”

“I watched you for six months,” Vincent interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic hum. “Every time you presented a restoration thesis at the institute. Every time that pathetic excuse for a man cut you down in public, and you stood back up with your head held high. I knew your name before you stepped into that elevator because I had already memorized every file, every paper, every dream you ever filed away.”

Elena’s breath hitched. The intensity in his eyes was staggering—a roaring fire hidden beneath a sheet of ice.

“You’ve been watching me,” she whispered.

“Protecting what others were too blind to value,” Vincent corrected. He leaned in closer, his voice a warm whisper against her skin. “And now, you are free. No more hiding. No more apologies.”
