Chapter 4 - The Boardroom AmbushThe following morning, the executive boardroom on the 40th floor of Whitmore Tower hummed with tense, electric energy.

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the Chicago skyline looked majestic under a clearing sky, but inside the room, the atmosphere was lethal.
Vivian Whitmore sat at the head of the long mahogany table, flanked by two corporate security guards and her personal legal counsel. She looked composed, her posture rigid, her expression one of supreme confidence. She had survived corporate wars, hostile takeovers, and family scandals. A rebellious daughter-in-law was nothing.
The heavy double doors swung open.
Ethan walked in first. He wasn't wearing his usual immaculate corporate armor; his tie was missing, his shirt collar unbuttoned, and his eyes were bloodshot from a sleepless night. Behind him walked Claire, head held high, supported by her uncle Marcus Vance, who carried a thick manila folder under his arm.
"Ethan," Vivian said smoothly, folding her hands on the table. "I trust you've come to your senses. We have a press release ready to announce an amicable separation. It protects the family name, and we'll ensure Claire receives a generous severance."
Ethan didn't sit down. He stopped midway across the Persian rug, staring at his mother with an expression so cold it made the security guards shift uncomfortably.
"Mother," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Where is Malcolm Avery?"
Vivian’s eyelids fluttered for a fraction of a second—the only tell she gave. "Dr. Avery is on administrative leave. His incompetence regarding your medical records has damaged Whitmore Diagnostics. I've already initiated termination proceedings against him."
"Incompetence?" Ethan let out a dry, humorless laugh. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small digital recorder, placing it gently on the polished wood of the table. "That’s funny. Because Malcolm gave me a very different word for it last night in the parking garage. He called it conspiracy."
Vivian’s expression hardened. "You've been listening to a discredited doctor who is trying to save his own license. How pathetic, Ethan. You're letting a pregnant gold-digger turn you against your own family."
"Don't you dare talk about her," Ethan snapped, slamming his hand onto the table. The sound echoed off the glass walls like a gunshot.
Marcus Vance stepped forward, opening the manila folder. He didn't raise his voice; his tone was clinical, devastating, and absolute.
"Vivian Whitmore," Marcus said calmly, sliding several documents across the table. "At 8:00 AM this morning, the state forensic laboratory in Springfield completed the preliminary expedited DNA marker analysis on Ethan Whitmore and the biological sample provided by Claire Whitmore."
He paused, letting the silence stretch.
"The probability of paternity is 99.999%. Ethan is the biological father."
Vivian didn't blink. "Tests can be manipulated. We will challenge the chain of custody."
"You can't challenge a federal warrant, Vivian," Marcus replied, pulling out a second set of papers. "And you certainly can't challenge the cyber-forensic recovery of the original 2023 medical database from Mercy General. We have the original file—the one you ordered Dr. Avery to destroy. It proves Ethan has always been fully fertile, and that you fabricated his sterility diagnosis to defraud him of his marital and reproductive rights."
Vivian slowly stood up from her chair, her eyes burning with fury. "You think a few stolen files and a disgruntled doctor can destroy what I built? The board answers to me! The shares are in my trust!"
"Not anymore," a calm, deep voice spoke from the doorway.
Everyone turned.

Stepping into the boardroom was Arthur Pendelton, the senior-most member of the Whitmore board of trustees, accompanied by three federal marshals and corporate compliance officers.
"The board held an emergency quorum at 7:30 this morning," Arthur said, looking directly at Vivian. "Upon reviewing the evidence of systemic fraud, unauthorized medical tampering, and deliberate sabotage of the CEO's personal life, the board has voted unanimously to strip you of your voting rights, freeze your trust assets, and remove you as chairwoman effective immediately."
