Chapter 8 - The Ultrasound of TruthFive months later, the spring flowers were blooming across the manicured lawns of the Whitmore estate. The nursery upstairs was bathed in warm morning light, painted in soft tones of sage green and cream, complete with a handcrafted crib that Ethan had built with his own hands.

Claire lay comfortably on a mobile ultrasound bed set up in the master bedroom, her belly fully rounded at nearly thirty-six weeks.

Dr. Sarah Vance—a trusted cousin of Marcus, and an independent maternal-fetal specialist with zero ties to corporate hospitals—moved the cold transducer across Claire’s skin.

Ethan stood beside the bed, holding Claire’s hand so tightly his knuckles were white.

The room filled with the rapid, powerful sound of their son’s heartbeat. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Strong, steady, and alive.

Dr. Sarah smiled broadly, pointing to the monitor. "Look at that profile, folks. Ten fingers, ten toes, and completely healthy. He’s measuring right on schedule."

Claire let out a long, shaky breath, smiling up at Ethan. "Hear that? He’s stubborn. Exactly like his father."

Ethan laughed, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Let's hope he has your patience."

Suddenly, the house intercom buzzed—a sharp, shrill sound that interrupted the peaceful moment.

Ethan frowned, releasing Claire’s hand. "That shouldn't be ringing. Security is routed to my phone, and I put it on Do Not Disturb."

"Go check," Claire said gently. "Dr. Sarah and I are fine."

Ethan stepped out of the bedroom, walking down the sweeping staircase toward the grand foyer. When he opened the heavy front doors, he expected to see a delivery driver or local mail.

Instead, standing on the marble porch were two men in charcoal suits holding sleek leather briefcases, flanked by local county deputies.

"Mr. Ethan Whitmore?" the lead man asked, flashing a metal badge bearing international seals.

Ethan’s stomach dropped. "I am. Who are you?"

"Special Agent Keller, Swiss Federal Financial Regulatory Authority, acting on an international treaty subpoena," the man stated calmly. "We are here to execute an emergency asset and wardship lien issued by Vanguard Holdings regarding the unborn primary heir to the Whitmore estate."

Ethan froze. "What are you talking about? There are no liens on my child. My mother's trusts were dissolved by federal order!"

Agent Keller stepped past Ethan into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. "Mr. Whitmore, your mother may have lost her corporate control, but thirty years ago, you signed a master generational succession covenant. Under Swiss law clause 8-B, any direct descendant of a Whitmore CEO is legally bound to Vanguard Trust until the age of twenty-one."

Ethan felt the floor vanish beneath him. "That's impossible. That clause was buried in onboarding paperwork when I was twenty-one. It was fraudulent!"

"It was legally notarized and filed internationally," Agent Keller said coldly, pulling out a thick sheaf of stamped documents. "Furthermore, due to the ongoing federal criminal investigations surrounding your mother's fraud—which legally implicate your household—the Swiss courts have granted Vanguard temporary protective wardship of the child upon birth. The baby will be transferred to a private European medical facility immediately following delivery."

Ethan’s vision went red. "You will never touch my child."

"It’s not a request, Mr. Whitmore," Agent Keller replied, gesturing to the deputies. "We have a court order. And right now, your wife is thirty-six weeks pregnant inside this house."
