Chapter 1 - THE CRACK IN THE CASTLEThe dial tone clicked off, but the silence that followed felt heavy, thick with the arrogance of two people who had spent months believing they were untouchable.

Evan chuckled, waving his steak knife lazily in the air. "Oh, look, Margaret is playing corporate general. What are you going to do, cut our allowance by fifty dollars? Fire Emily’s secretary? Let me remind you, mother-in-law, that I am the director of regional operations for Hartwell Dining. Without me, your flagship stores in the downtown district would crumble in a week."

Gloria scoffed, swirling her Bordeaux in my imported crystal goblet. "Some mothers never know when to let go. Emily chose to marry a man of status. She belongs to our family now, Margaret. If she can't handle the kitchen and a crying infant at the same time, that’s a failure of her upbringing—which falls squarely on you."

Emily shrank further into the corner of the kitchen, her hands still damp from dishwater, her fingers nervously twisting the fabric of her worn-out sweater. The purple bruise on her wrist peeked out like a badge of tyranny. She looked at me with eyes full of terror, mouthing a silent Please stop, Mom, they’ll make it worse later.

My heart bled, but my resolve hardened into steel. They thought I was an old, out-of-touch woman throwing a tantrum because her daughter looked tired. They had no idea who built the empire they were currently feasting upon.

"Status," I repeated softly, stepping away from the baby's stroller. "Evan, do you even know what the word owner means?"

"I manage the books, I manage the staff, and I manage your daughter," Evan snapped, his face flushing with irritation as he slammed his fork down. "In the eyes of the law, a husband's control over household administration is absolute, especially when the wife has signed away her managerial rights to her spouse during our marriage counseling sessions. Remember that little paper you forced her to sign, Emily? Your shares are under my proxy!"

A triumphant smirk spread across Gloria's face. "Game, set, match, Margaret. You taught your daughter to be weak, and we taught her obedience."

Before I could answer, Evan’s smartphone buzzed violently on the mahogany table. Then Gloria’s phone chimed. Then, across the neighborhood, the harsh electronic notification sound echoed simultaneously.

Evan picked up his phone, his smirk faltering as his eyes scanned the screen. "What is this? A system glitch?"

"Read it out loud, Evan," I said, stepping forward, letting the full weight of my presence fill the room. "Let everyone at the table hear how absolute your control really is."
