Chapter 5 - THE COUNTER-ATTACKBy 9:00 AM the next morning, the corporate war room at Hartwell Dining headquarters was buzzing with intense energy.

I sat at the head of the polished oak conference table, wearing a tailored navy suit that commanded absolute authority. To my right sat Emily, dressed in a sharp white blazer, holding a tablet displaying real-time financial reports. She looked nothing like the exhausted, bruised mother I had found scrubbing dishes twenty-four hours earlier. Anger had forged her into a warrior.

The frosted glass door swung open, and Evan walked in, flanked by a high-priced corporate defense lawyer he must have retained through a frantic emergency loan from an old college buddy.

Evan slammed his briefcase onto the table, his face red with fury. "This has gone far enough, Margaret! You’ve illegally locked me out of my office, frozen my personal accounts, and humiliated my mother on the public street! We are filing an immediate injunction for marital asset freezing and corporate reinstatement!"

The corporate lawyer, a slick man named Henderson who smelled heavily of expensive cologne, adjusted his glasses and flashed a practiced, condescending smile. "Mrs. Hartwell, let’s be entirely reasonable here. My client is a senior executive who has contributed significantly to this company's growth. A domestic dispute does not give you the right to unilaterally dismantle his career. If we take this to court, the media will have a field day with family infighting, and your stock prices will plummet."

I didn't blink. I slowly picked up a manila folder from the table and slid it across the wood toward Henderson.

"Open it, counsel," I said smoothly.

Henderson raised an eyebrow, picking up the folder. As he flipped open the cover, his confident smile slowly faded, replaced by a look of utter disbelief. He glanced sideways at Evan, then back down at the papers.

"What... what is this?" Henderson stammered, lowering his voice.

"That," I said, leaning forward and resting my elbows on the table, "is a forensic accounting report detailing thirty-four distinct instances of corporate embezzlement, fraudulent expense reporting, and kickbacks from third-party suppliers managed directly by my wonderful son-in-law over the past fourteen months."

Evan’s face turned the color of ash. "That’s... that’s fabricated! You hacked my system!"

"Not hacked, Evan. Audited," Emily spoke up for the first time, her voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. She tapped her tablet, projecting a massive spreadsheet onto the wall screen behind us. "Every single transaction was routed through a shell company registered under Gloria’s maiden name—a company that supposedly provided 'consulting services' to our downtown branches. Except, as our inventory logs prove, those branches never received a single hour of consulting."

Henderson stared at the screen, then snapped his briefcase shut with a loud click. He turned to Evan, his professional demeanor entirely gone. "You didn't tell me about shell companies, Mr. Hartwell. My representation ends right here. Good luck finding another lawyer."

"Henderson, wait! Don't leave!" Evan panicked, grabbing his lawyer’s sleeve, but Henderson shook him off and walked out of the conference room without looking back.
