Chapter 5 - The Digital Forensics Report

I didn't go back to the hospital immediately. Instead, I drove straight to the precinct and asked for Detective Miller.

She met me in a cramped glass-walled conference room littered with takeout containers and overflowing ashtrays. When I told her about the phone call from Julian Vance and the accusations regarding my sister's search history, Miller didn't look shocked. She just sighed, pulled a thick manila folder toward her, and slid a printed sheet across the table.

"Your father's attorney is playing dirty, but it's a predictable play," Miller said, tapping a finger against the paper. "They're trying to inject reasonable doubt by pointing the finger back at the victim. It’s textbook victim-blaming."

"So the search history... it was forged?" I asked, leaning forward.

"Not forged. Executed," Miller corrected. "We ran a deep-level forensic analysis on the home router's packet capture logs from last month. Those searches did happen from your sister's IP address. But look at the timestamp."

I squinted at the row of numbers: 12/14/2026 - 03:14:22 AM.

"She was asleep in her room on heavy sedatives at three in the morning," I said, remembering the night clearly because I had stayed over to monitor her breathing.

"Exactly," Miller smiled grimly. "Furthermore, the MAC address executing those queries wasn't her laptop. It was a cloned virtual machine running on an unregistered external device connected directly to the master network switch in your father's home office. Arthur Vance didn't just lock her in the garage last night; he spent three months building a digital paper trail to frame her for insurance fraud if things went sideways."

A wave of profound relief washed over me, followed immediately by a spike of cold fury. "Can you prove it in court?"

"We already did," Miller said, pulling out a second sheet—a signed search warrant return. "We executed a secondary warrant on your father's personal cloud storage account linked to his business email. We found a deleted document titled 'Exit_Strategy_Draft.docx' written three weeks ago. In it, he laid out the exact sequence: cut the heat, change the beneficiary, blame the victim's psychological instability, and collect the payout before the estate triggers a forensic audit."

She closed the folder with a sharp snap.

"Your father isn't just a cold-blooded abuser, Miss Vance. He's a sloppy criminal who thought technology couldn't talk back."
