Chapter 3 - THE REPOSSESSION OF THE EMPIRE

A phalanx of four uniformed federal marshals, flanked by two private security contractors in crisp black suits, marched into the grand foyer. Their heavy boots echoed like a judgment day drumbeat against the marble floors.
The crowd of venture capital elites and socialites instantly scrambled backward, parting like the Red Sea to clear a path.
“Adrian Vance?” the lead marshal called out, his voice flat, authoritative, and completely devoid of emotion.
Adrian froze mid-swing, his arm suspended in the air, his eyes darting wildly toward the door. “I... I am Adrian Vance. What is the meaning of this? This is a private residence!”
“Not anymore, Mr. Vance,” the marshal replied, stepping forward and flashing an official federal warrant. “By order of the Federal District Court and the Department of Financial Oversight, you are being served with a temporary restraining order, an immediate asset freeze, and a warrant for your arrest on charges of corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and domestic assault.”
Gasps erupted through the crowd. Cameras flashed—not from reporters, but from phones whipped out by guests desperately trying to capture the fall of the city’s rising star.
Vanessa shrieked, backing away until she hit a decorative pillar. “Adrian! Tell them it’s a mistake! Tell them she’s lying!”
Adrian turned back to me, his expression shifting from blind rage to sheer, unadulterated panic. He dropped to his knees, his expensive Italian loafers skidding across the shattered champagne glass on the floor, ignoring the tiny shards piercing his leather.
“Mara,” Adrian begged, his voice cracking as he reached out to grab the hem of my velvet trousers. “Mara, please. Look at me. We’re married. We’re having twins. You can’t do this to me. I’m your husband!”
I looked down at him, my expression an absolute wall of ice. I didn’t flinch, I didn't pull away, and I certainly didn't offer him a hand.
“You stopped being my husband the second you dragged me across those floorboards, Adrian,” I said, my voice quiet, cutting, and entirely final. “You thought my pregnancy made me weak. You thought silence meant submission.”
I crouched down slightly so our eyes were level, leaning in close enough for him to smell the peppermint on my breath.
“You forgot one fundamental rule of business, Adrian,” I whispered. “Never underestimate a silent partner with a bloodline to protect.”
The federal marshals moved in instantly, grabbing Adrian by both arms and hauling him up off the floor. He thrashed and kicked, screaming obscenities as the cold steel handcuffs clicked sharply around his wrists.
“Let me go! You can’t do this! Mara! MARA!” he roared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings as they dragged him backward through the heavy oak doors and out into the cool night air.
Vanessa tried to slip away toward the side corridor, blending into the panicked crowd, but Marcus—my Director of Security—stepped smoothly into her path, blocking her exit.
“Ms. Brooks,” Marcus said politely, holding out a thick manila folder. “A formal notice of eviction from this property, as well as a subpoena to testify regarding your complicity in corporate asset concealment. Please sign the acknowledgement of receipt.”
Vanessa stared at the folder in sheer horror, her hands trembling as she realized she was entirely stranded on a sinking ship.
The crowd of guests scrambled toward the exits like rats fleeing a burning warehouse, abandoning their champagne flutes, their expensive coats, and their sycophantic alliances in a chaotic rush to distance themselves from the disgraced venture capitalist.
Within five minutes, the grand mansion—the very house Adrian had bragged about owning just hours earlier—was completely empty, save for the federal agents, my security detail, and me.
I stood alone in the center of the vast foyer, listening to the sudden, profound silence settle over the house.
Suddenly, a familiar, sharp twang rippled through my lower abdomen. The adrenaline that had sustained me through the confrontation vanished instantly, leaving behind a wave of pure, agonizing physical exhaustion. My knees buckled.

“Ma’am!” Marcus shouted, catching me just before I hit the marble floor.
“The baby... the twins,” I gasped, clutching my stomach as a warm, terrifying dampness spread beneath my silk trousers. “Marcus... get me to the hospital. Now.”
