Chapter 5 - THE EMPIRE REBORN

At exactly ten o’clock in the morning, the wall-mounted ultra-HD screen in my hospital suite flickered to life.

One by one, the thumbnails of Vanguard Capital’s remaining senior partners popped up on the display. These were the men who had spent years nodding deferentially to Adrian while whispering behind his back—and behind mine. Today, every single one of their faces was pale, tense, and utterly submissive.

They didn't see a fragile, bedridden pregnant woman anymore. They saw the apex predator who had dismantled their former CEO in a single evening without even raising her voice.

“Good morning, gentlemen,” I said, my voice clear, steady, and amplified through the room’s high-grade audio system.

“Mrs... Mrs. Vance,” the senior managing partner stammered, clearing his throat nervously. “We received the emergency restructuring notice. We’re... we’re at your disposal.”

“I know you are,” I replied, leaning back against the propped pillows, my expression completely impassive. “Let’s dispense with the pleasantries. As of eight o’clock this morning, Vanguard Capital ceases to exist as an independent entity. It has been formally absorbed into the Mara Holdings Syndicate.”

A collective intake of breath echoed through the conference call.

“Furthermore,” I continued, my gaze sweeping across the grid of terrified faces on the screen, “all executive compensation packages are being tied directly to ethical compliance and verified asset performance. Anyone caught skimming, falsifying reports, or treating this firm as their personal playground will meet the exact same fate as my former husband.”

Silence hung heavy over the connection. No one dared to object. No one dared to interrupt.

“Now,” I said, my tone shifting from stern to effortlessly authoritative. “Let’s review the Q3 acquisition pipeline. Thomas Finch’s replacement is currently reviewing the Frankfurt server logs. I want a complete risk assessment on my desk by noon.”

“Yes, ma’am! Right away, Mrs. Vance!” several voices chorused simultaneously.

With a single tap on my bedside tablet, I severed the connection, plunging the screen back into darkness.

The room fell quiet again, save for the rhythmic, comforting heartbeat monitors beside my bed.

The door opened quietly, and Dr. Hayes walked in, carrying a small bundle wrapped in pale blue and pink blankets. She looked at me with a profound, knowing smile.

“The NICU team cleared them for a brief visit,” Dr. Hayes said softly, stepping forward and gently placing the tiny, fragile bundle into my waiting arms.

I looked down. Two tiny, perfect faces stared back up at me with sleepy, unblinking eyes. Their little hands curled into microscopic fists against their chests.

Tears—real, warm, liberated tears—pricked the corners of my eyes, spilling over my lashes and tracking down my cheeks. But this time, there was no pain, no fear, and no submission.

I pressed a soft, lingering kiss to each of their velvety foreheads, wrapping my arms securely around them.

“Look at you two,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion as I looked out the window at the vast, sprawling city below us. “You own everything now. And no one will ever touch us again.”
