Chapter 4 - THE HOSPITAL WARD AND THE NEW BOARDROOM

The sirens wailing outside the private ambulance served as a fitting soundtrack to the complete obliteration of Adrian Vance’s life. But inside the sterile, softly lit emergency suite of St. Jude’s Private Wing, all of that felt a million miles away.

“Your cervix is holding, Mrs. Vance, but it was a very near thing,” Dr. Hayes said, her face lined with professional concern as she adjusted the fetal monitors strapped across my belly. The steady, rhythmic whoosh-whoosh-whoosh of two healthy heartbeats filled the room, steady and strong.

I let out a long, shuddering breath, pressing my head back against the pillows. “Are they safe?”

“They’re fighters, just like their mother,” Dr. Hayes smiled warmly, patting my hand. “Strict bed rest is no longer a suggestion—it’s an absolute command for the next forty-eight hours. You pushed your body to the absolute limit tonight.”

“It was worth it,” I murmured, closing my eyes.

Just then, the door to the recovery suite clicked open. Marcus stepped inside, holding a secure tablet computer and a stack of freshly printed financial briefs.

“Director Vance,” Marcus said quietly, standing at a respectful distance. “The preliminary restructuring of Vanguard Capital is complete. All executive board members who aided Adrian in his fraudulent reporting have been suspended pending internal audit. Furthermore, the Pacific Syndicate has formally severed ties with Adrian and has requested to enter into an exclusive investment partnership directly with your family’s holding entity.”

I opened my eyes, the cold, analytical edge returning to my gaze. “And Adrian?”

“Currently being held at the municipal detention center without bail,” Marcus reported, a slight smirk playing on his lips. “His defense attorney tried to file an emergency injunction to freeze the asset transfer, but our legal team presented the unredacted video footage from your hallway security cameras directly to the magistrate within twenty minutes.”

“And the judge’s reaction?”

“Let’s just say,” Marcus replied smoothly, “the judge was physically ill watching the footage. Adrian is facing up to fifteen years for systemic corporate fraud, embezzlement, and felony domestic battery. Vanessa Brooks has also been implicated as a co-conspirator in the misappropriation of company funds for personal luxury acquisitions.”

I nodded slowly, looking out the large picture window toward the city skyline glittering in the distance. The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, painting the sky in shades of deep amber and cold steel blue.

“Good,” I said softly. “Set up a virtual executive board meeting for ten o’clock this morning. I want to address the remaining senior partners via secure video link from my hospital bed.”

May you like

“From your hospital bed, ma’am?” Marcus asked, raising an eyebrow. “Shouldn't you rest?”

“Empires don’t run themselves, Marcus,” I said, resting one hand protectively over my sleeping twins. “And I have a company to rename.”
