Chapter 10 - The Unforgivable LegacyA year passed before I saw Michael again.

It happened by pure chance at a charity gala downtown—an annual fundraiser hosted by the foundation that now bore my wife’s name. I was standing near the grand staircase, speaking with several board members, when I noticed a figure standing near the catering entrance in a faded, ill-fitting suit.

It was Michael.

He looked older. The arrogant spark in his eyes had been permanently replaced by a hollow, haunted exhaustion. He was holding a stack of cheap flyers, working as an entry-level logistics runner for the catering company servicing the event.

As I turned my head, our eyes locked across the crowded ballroom.

For a long moment, the world around us seemed to freeze, echoing that terrible night in the bridal corridor a year ago. Only this time, the roles were entirely reversed.

He stood at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at the empire he had thrown away for a moment of petty cruelty and an illusion of status. He looked at me with silent, desperate plea, waiting for me to step forward, waiting for a lifeline, waiting for a father's mercy.

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I didn't say a word.

Instead, I raised my glass in a silent, chilling toast to the architect of his own ruin, turned my back, and walked away into the bright, unending light of the future—leaving him standing forever in the dark.
