It happened by pure chance at a charity gala downtown—an annual fundraiser hosted by the foundation that now bore my wife’s name. I was standing near the grand staircase, speaking with several board members, when I noticed a figure standing near the catering entrance in a faded, ill-fitting suit.
It was Michael.
He looked older. The arrogant spark in his eyes had been permanently replaced by a hollow, haunted exhaustion. He was holding a stack of cheap flyers, working as an entry-level logistics runner for the catering company servicing the event.
As I turned my head, our eyes locked across the crowded ballroom.
For a long moment, the world around us seemed to freeze, echoing that terrible night in the bridal corridor a year ago. Only this time, the roles were entirely reversed.
He stood at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at the empire he had thrown away for a moment of petty cruelty and an illusion of status. He looked at me with silent, desperate plea, waiting for me to step forward, waiting for a lifeline, waiting for a father's mercy.
