Chapter 9 - The New FoundationTwo weeks later, the legal dust had settled completely.

Michael had been formally terminated from Whitaker Holdings for gross misconduct and workplace violence. Lacking income, credit, or family support, he and Cassandra had been forced to break their townhouse lease and move into a cramped, run-down studio apartment on the industrial edge of the city. Their high-society friends, smelling blood in the water, had completely vanished from their social circle.

Harrison Brooks finalized the restructuring of the Whitaker Family Legacy Trust. True to my word, every single penny that would have gone to Michael was redirected into the Ellen Whitaker Foundation for Domestic Support and Recovery—a charitable organization dedicated to helping victims of domestic abuse and familial violence find safety, dignity, and independence.

Ellen and I stood on the back patio of our estate, looking out over the sprawling gardens as the leaves turned brilliant shades of amber and gold.

Ellen took a deep breath of the crisp autumn air, a serene, genuine smile gracing her lips. The bruises on her arm had faded away entirely, leaving behind only the quiet strength of a woman who had survived the worst and emerged completely whole.

“Do you ever think about calling him?” she asked softly, resting her head gently against my shoulder.

I wrapped my arm around her, kissing the top of her head.

“No, my love,” I answered, looking out at the iron gates gleaming in the afternoon sun. “We gave him twenty-eight years of our lives, and he showed us who he truly was in ten seconds. From here on out, we protect what matters.”

She smiled, intertwining her fingers with mine.

“Let’s go inside,” she said. “Our real life is waiting.”
