Chapter 1 - The First DominoThe digital clock on my nightstand read 4:12 AM. Outside, the sprawling acreage of our estate was quiet, shrouded in the pre-dawn gloom of late summer. Beside me, Ellen stirred, a soft, pained murmur escaping her lips as her bruised arm shifted against the sheets.

I sat up silently, careful not to wake her, and stepped out onto the hardwood floor of the study. The glowing blue light of my desktop monitor cast long, sharp shadows across the room. In my hand, a small black piece of plastic—the flash drive containing the raw security footage from the venue—lay like a detonator.
My first call was at 5:00 AM sharp to Marcus Vance, my corporate counsel and lifelong friend. Marcus didn’t do casual mornings; he answered on the second ring, his voice crisp and entirely awake.
“Robert? It’s five in the morning. If this isn't an emergency, my golf clubs are going to miss me.”
“Marcus, I need you at your desk by six. Bring the corporate governance files for Whitaker Holdings, the subsidiary restructuring papers, and the executive compensation agreements.”
There was a brief pause on the line. Marcus knew my voice well enough to recognize the cold, tectonic shift beneath my words. “What happened?”
“Michael signed his executive tracking forms last month, but the finalization clause requires a dual-signature acknowledgement within ninety days, correct?”
“Yes. It hasn’t been countersigned by you yet.”
“It never will be,” I said evenly. “Revoke his executive appointment effective immediately. Reassign his title to Junior Logistics Coordinator, move his office down to the sub-level storage facility, and strip him of his company-issued vehicle lease. I want the keys and the toll pass on my desk by noon.”
Marcus caught his breath. “Robert, that’s his primary income vehicle. He’s two weeks married. What did he do?”

“He forgot who built the table he’s sitting at,” I replied, cutting the connection.
The first domino had fallen. By sunrise, Michael’s corporate life would be reduced to rubble, and he wouldn’t even see it coming.
