Chapter 3 - The General’s Secret Briefing

The Secure Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) deep beneath Fort Meade hummed with the quiet, relentless energy of a billion-dollar supercomputer cluster. Blue light flickered across rows of monitors where analysts tracked global comms, satellite trajectories, and classified threat matrices.

I sat at the head of the conference table, my freshly shaved head gleaming under the sterile fluorescent panels. My dress uniform was immaculate. Not a single thread was out of place.

The heavy steel door hissed open, and Major General Thomas Hayes walked in, his expression solemn. He held a thick manila folder stamped EYES ONLY / DIRECTORATE COMMAND.

“Colonel Vance,” Hayes said, dropping the folder in front of me. “I heard about your morning transition. Impressive logistics. Moving an entire household out from under a pair of domestic terrorists in under four hours is textbook urban extraction.”

“Thank you, General,” I replied, opening the folder. “Intelligence is about recognizing anomalies in the operational environment. I simply applied field protocols to my domestic life.”

Hayes let out a dry, barking laugh, pulling out the chair opposite me. “Good. Because you’re going to need that exact same ruthlessness for what's sitting on your new desk.”

He slid a glossy 8x10 photograph across the table.

It was a picture of a sleek, high-end corporate office building in downtown Washington, D.C. Emblazoned across the glass facade was a logo I recognized instantly: Vortex Capital Partners.

My stomach tightened.

“Vortex Capital,” I murmured. “That’s the Delaware shell company Ryan used to take out that fraudulent business loan.”

“It’s worse than that, Colonel,” Hayes said, leaning forward, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. “Vortex Capital isn't just a front for a crypto scam. For the past six months, our counter-intelligence division has been tracking a foreign intelligence asset operating inside the defense contracting sector. They’ve been leaking classified telemetry data regarding our next-generation satellite defense grid.”

I stared at the general, my breath catching in my throat. “Who is the asset?”

Hayes tapped the photograph of the Vortex Capital building. “The managing director of Vortex Capital is a man named Julian Vance. Ryan’s older brother. The golden boy accountant who supposedly lives in Zurich.”

The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

Ryan didn't just commit accidental financial fraud. He wasn't just a lazy, ungrateful husband manipulated by a toxic mother.

He was a foot soldier in an industrial-scale espionage and financial extortion ring run by his own brother, designed specifically to compromise military officers married into their family.

“They target officers with high-level security clearances,” I whispered, the pieces clicking together with terrifying precision. “They marry them, isolate them, drain their finances, and then use forged debt to blackmail them into leaking classified data.”

“Bingo,” Hayes said grimly. “And guess who just signed your new command authorization yesterday morning? You didn't just get promoted because of your record, Colonel. You got promoted because you were their primary target. They thought breaking you would give them an inside track to the nation's most sensitive intelligence grid.”

I looked down at my hands—hands that had just shaved my own head to reclaim my autonomy. The fury that had burned inside me moments before transformed into something cold, heavy, and lethal.

They wanted to break me?

I was going to dismantle their entire criminal syndicate piece by piece, and I wouldn't stop until every single Vance was doing hard time in a federal penitentiary.
