Chapter 8 - The Commander’s Return

Six months after the trial, the sun was setting over the secure perimeter of Fort Meade.
From the balcony of my new quarters on base, I looked out over the rolling green hills of Maryland. The sky was painted in strokes of deep violet and burning gold. My hair had grown out into a sleek, dark military crop—neat, sharp, and entirely on my own terms.
My phone buzzed on the patio table.
It was an encrypted notification from the Department of Defense promotion board.
“Colonel Vance, your nomination for Brigadier General has been officially forwarded to the Senate Armed Services Committee with unanimous bipartisan backing.”
I smiled, taking a sip of my coffee.
They had tried to break me in the dark, cutting my hair while I slept, thinking they could reduce me to a silenced, obedient housewife. Instead, they had inadvertently forged me into something far more dangerous: a leader who could conquer any battlefield, domestic or foreign.
