Chapter 7 - The Cornered Predators

While awaiting the jury’s verdict under house arrest with electronic monitoring ankle bracelets, Luke and Reid Higgins realized that a lifetime in federal prison was now an absolute certainty. Driven by rage, panic, and a complete breakdown of judgment, the brothers cut their tracking monitors late one rainy evening.

Armed with high-powered rifles retrieved from a hidden cabin in the Blackwood Ridge mountains, they targeted the secure military housing compound where Anna and I were residing during the trial.

They believed they could eliminate the witnesses and force a mistrial. They didn't realize that Colonel Cole had placed the compound under 24-hour tactical security.

As the brothers crept through the tree line near the rear of the home, my military training kicked in. Working alongside a team of former Ranger brethren, we allowed the brothers to advance deep into the target zone before illuminating the entire perimeter with high-intensity floodlights.

"Drop your weapons!" my voice echoed through the trees, steady and commanding.

Luke raised his rifle, but before he could acquire a target, a non-lethal flashbang detonated at his feet, disorienting both men completely. Within six seconds, my team swarmed the position, disarming and pinning both brothers to the muddy ground without firing a single lethal round.

Luke spat blood into the dirt, screaming curses, while Reid broke down in tears, begging for mercy—the exact same mercy they had denied my nine-year-old daughter.
