Chapter 4 - The Predator’s Return

Two weeks later, the once-mighty Whitmore Global Logistics was a smoking crater.

The Department of Defense officially terminated all active contracts, citing gross negligence and security breaches. Institutional investors pulled out en masse, sending the company’s stock price tumbling by 82% in a single trading session. Arthur Pendelton and the remaining board members filed a joint multi-million-dollar lawsuit against Ethan for corporate malfeasance, attempting to seize his personal assets to pay off crippling debts.

And Ethan? Ethan was utterly ruined.

He sat in the dimly lit corner booth of an upscale downtown restaurant in Los Angeles—a place where he used to be treated like royalty. Now, the waiters actively avoided his eye, and the patrons whispered behind their menus, pointing smartphones in his direction.

Across from him sat Vanessa Carter. Gone were the designer shirts and arrogant smiles. She looked pale, exhausted, and desperate, her hair pulled back into a messy bun, wearing a plain trench coat.

"You promised me this wouldn't happen, Ethan!" Vanessa hissed across the table, her voice trembling with fury. "You said your wife was clueless! You said the company was bulletproof!"

"Shut up, Vanessa," Ethan muttered, his eyes bloodshot, clutching a glass of scotch like a lifeline. He hadn't slept properly in fourteen days. The stress had aged him a decade; deep dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his designer suit hung loosely off his frame. "Just... shut your mouth. My lawyers are trying to salvage—"

"Your lawyers quit yesterday, Ethan!" Vanessa slammed her coffee cup down, spilling dark liquid across the pristine white tablecloth. "Everyone has abandoned ship! I’m facing civil lawsuits for corporate espionage, and my bank accounts have been frozen by federal investigators! You ruined my life!"

"Your life?" Ethan let out a manic, broken laugh, leaning forward until his face was inches from hers. "You’re the one who sent that damn photo! You couldn't just keep your mouth shut and play mistress quietly! You had to poke the bear!"

"I wanted her to know she lost!" Vanessa screamed, drawing the attention of the entire restaurant.

"Well, congratulations," a smooth, calm voice echoed from behind them. "She knows."

Ethan and Vanessa both froze.

Slowly, Ethan turned his head.

Standing beside the table was a woman in an impeccably tailored white Chanel pantsuit, oversized Celine sunglasses resting on the bridge of her nose, exuding an aura of absolute, untouchable power.

Elena.

My hair was styled in sleek waves, my skin glowing with the effortless radiance of a woman who had spent the last fortnight touring European luxury retreats while her ex-husband's world burned to ash.

"E-Elena..." Ethan stammered, scrambling backward in his seat, nearly tipping his chair over. "How... where did you come from? You were supposed to be in Europe!"

I slid my sunglasses down my nose, looking at them both with clinical detachment, as if inspecting two stray insects on a clean floor.

"I was," I replied smoothly, taking a slow sip of sparkling water from a glass a waiter had just placed down. "And now I'm back. To pick up the remaining pieces."
