Chapter 5 - The Masterstroke

Ethan scrambled to his feet, desperation clawing at his throat. He reached out, attempting to grab my wrist, but I stepped back seamlessly, signaling a towering private security guard behind me to block his advance.
"Elena, please!" Ethan begged, his voice cracking as the restaurant stared in absolute fascination. "Listen to me! I made a mistake—a stupid, meaningless mistake with Vanessa! It meant nothing! We built this company together, remember? Seven years! You can't just throw it all away over a moment of weakness!"
I tilted my head, smiling faintly. "A moment of weakness? Ethan, you spent three years funneling corporate funds into shell companies to finance Vanessa’s apartment in Santa Monica. You thought I was too busy managing your public image to notice the missing decimal points on our quarterly audits."
Ethan’s face turned the color of ash. "Y-You knew?"
"I knew before you even hired her," I said softly, stepping closer so only he could hear. "I was the one who vetted her resume, Ethan. I knew her background, her debts, and her ambitions. I let you keep her around because I wanted to see how long it would take for your arrogance to destroy you. And honestly? You exceeded my expectations."
Vanessa, realizing she had been nothing more than a pawn in a much larger game, lunged forward from her seat. "You set us up! You manipulated this entire thing!"
"I simply provided the match," I replied, not even glancing at her. "You two provided the gasoline."
I signaled my attorney, Evelyn Vance, who stepped out from the shadows of the restaurant lobby holding a thick black leather briefcase. She opened it on the adjacent table, extracting a single legal document stamped with official court seals.
"What is that?" Ethan whispered, staring at the paper with dread.
"That," Evelyn said with a sharp professional smile, "is the final asset liquidation agreement. Because of the federal fraud charges and the board’s civil lawsuits against you, every remaining asset bearing your name—including your sports car collection, your primary residence in Beverly Hills, and your remaining shares in Whitmore Global Logistics—has been seized to settle corporate debts."
"No..." Ethan shook his head frantically. "No, that’s impossible! That’s my property!"
"Not anymore," I said, gently adjusting the lapel of my jacket. "As of 12:00 p.m. today, my newly formed holding company, Aethelgard Capital, has officially purchased the entirety of Whitmore Global Logistics' intellectual property, patents, and client database out of bankruptcy court for a total of one dollar."
Ethan stared at me, his eyes wide with absolute horror. "You... you bought the company? You bought my company?"
May you like
"It was never your company, Ethan," I whispered, my voice cutting through the ambient noise of the restaurant like a scalpel. "It was mine. You were simply the placeholder."
I turned on my heel, leaving them sitting in the wreckage of their own making, while cameras flashed from paparazzi who had somehow been tipped off to capture the final fall of the disgraced CEO.
