Chapter 11 - The Power Shift

The glass doors of the Sterling Global boardroom swung open, and sixty seconds later, the room went dead silent.

Twelve executive board members sat around the forty-foot mahogany table, each wearing suits that cost more than a teacher’s annual salary. They had spent twenty-five years running the company under Richard Vance’s shadow, taking massive bonuses while turning a blind eye to where the money came from.

I didn't take a seat. I stood at the head of the table, flanked by federal officers and two corporate security guards.

"Who do you think you are?" demanded Arthur Sterling Jr., my biological mother’s distant cousin, slamming his pen onto the table. "You walk in here with a badge and a story, expecting us to hand over a fifty-billion-dollar corporation to a girl who was raised in a suburban basement?"

I didn't raise my voice. I pulled out a sleek black tablet and tapped the screen. Instantly, the massive high-definition monitors lining the boardroom walls lit up, displaying detailed forensic audit reports for every single director in the room.

"Arthur Sterling Jr., offshore shell company in Panama, eight million dollars in tax evasion," I said smoothly, pointing to the screen. "Director Chen, illegal insider trading on medical stocks, twelve million dollars. Director Hayes, embezzlement from employee pension funds."

The color drained from Arthur’s face. The entire board stared at the screens in sheer terror.

"My mother built this company," I said, leaning over the table. "You scavenged it. Effective immediately, every single one of you is stripped of your voting rights, your stock options, and your executive access. You have ten minutes to clear your desks before federal marshals escort you to the local field office for questioning."

"You can't fire all of us!" Chen shouted, trembling. "The stock will plummet! The market will panic!"

"The market responds to strength," I replied, stepping back toward the door. "And today, the market learns that Sterling Global is under new management."
