Chapter 12 - The Shadow Behind the Throne
By midnight, the Sterling Tower was quiet. The corrupted board members were gone, replaced by a temporary crisis team I had hand-picked during my years with Vanguard.
I sat in my mother’s old corner office, reviewing the encrypted servers that federal agents had seized from Judge Vance’s residence. But as I dug deeper into the financial logs, something felt terribly wrong.
Judge Vance and his brother Richard were corrupt, greedy, and ruthless. But they didn't have the technical sophistication to execute the complex wire transfers that had funded my suppression for twenty-five years.
"There's a secondary node," I murmured, my fingers flying across my laptop keyboard.
Agent Marcus Sterling walked into the office, carrying two mugs of black coffee. He set one on my desk and leaned against the glass window. "You should get some sleep, Victoria. You’ve been working for thirty-six hours straight."
"Look at this, Marcus," I said, turning the screen toward him. "The fifty thousand dollars a month that Eleanor received wasn't coming from the Vance brothers' private trust. It was passing through a secondary clearing house called The Apex Syndicate."
Marcus froze. For a fraction of a second, his posture stiffened, his hand hovering over his coffee mug.
"Apex?" Marcus asked, his voice carefully neutral. "That’s an old offshore holding company that went bankrupt a decade ago."
"No, it didn't," I said, staring at his eyes. "Apex is active. And the master authorization key for those transfers was signed by an internal executive right here inside Sterling Global—someone who had clearance even higher than Richard Vance."
Marcus smiled faintly, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "Well, we’ll let the forensic team handle it in the morning."

So why was his signature matching the encrypted hash key sitting on my screen?
