Chapter 3 - THE SHADOW IN THE LEDGERDr. Vance’s face drained of color as the two federal agents walked directly past me and placed their badges on his desk.

"Dr. Victor Vance?" the lead agent announced. "I’m Special Agent Marcus Miller with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Diversion Control Division. We are executing a federal search warrant for all digital logs, server records, and financial ledgers associated with St. Jude’s specialty distribution."
Patricia immediately stood up, clutching her designer purse to her chest. "This is a private administrative hearing! You have no right to intrude on family matters!"
Agent Miller didn't even glance at her. "Ma'am, sit down and keep your hands visible."
I turned to my father, completely stunned. "Dad... how?"
Dad walked over, placing a comforting arm around my shoulders. "When Derek told you last night that 'family helps family,' he forgot that my old colleagues in federal law enforcement are still family to me. We didn't sleep last night, Claire. We ran the corporate routing codes."
Denise Harper opened her briefcase and pulled out a stack of printouts, laying them directly over Vance’s folder.
"What Dr. Vance failed to mention," Denise stated firmly, "is that the home IP address used to authorize those fraudulent pharmaceutical inventory drops wasn't registered to Claire's home computer. It was accessed via a virtual private network linked directly to Patricia’s residential address in suburban Columbus—paid for by corporate credit cards issued under Aegis Holdings."
Patricia’s lips trembled. "That’s... that’s a lie! Derek set up my Wi-Fi! I don't know anything about computers!"
"You knew enough to spend $14,000 at the Indiana Casino Hotel three nights ago using a business debit card registered to that exact shell company," Dad said quietly, staring her dead in the eyes. "The same night my six-year-old granddaughter was drinking water because there was no milk in the fridge."
Dr. Vance slammed his hand on the desk. "This is absurd! Whatever domestic disputes you people have has nothing to do with this hospital’s executive management!"
"It has everything to do with you, Victor," Agent Miller interrupted. "Because twelve minutes ago, another team of federal agents raided your residence in Dublin, Ohio. They found four commercial grade storage units containing unregistered clinical supplies—all bearing St. Jude’s serial tracking tags."
Vance’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
The two federal agents moved behind Vance’s chair and gestured for him to stand. "Dr. Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, mail fraud, and wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the agents handcuffed the hospital COO in his own office, Patricia backed toward the exit, her eyes wide with terror. She reached for the door handle, but my father stepped smoothly into her path.
"Where are you going, Patricia?" Dad asked quietly. "Don't you want to be there when the police serve the search warrant on your house?"
Patricia glared at him with pure hatred. "You think you’re so smart, Richard? You think you’ve saved her? You have no idea what Derek has done with the title to your daughter's house. By noon today, the bank is foreclosing. She won't even have a roof over her child’s head!"

My chest squeezed tight. "What did he do to the house?!"
Patricia smiled wickedly, her fear momentarily replaced by spite. "Check your mail, Claire. Your precious husband took out a $200,000 secondary private equity mortgage six months ago. And he defaulted on the very first payment."
