Chapter 7 - THE BASEMENT VAULT"GET DOWN!" Dad roared, tackling me and Denise to the wet grass behind his truck.

The two police officers dropped behind their cruiser, pulling Derek down with them as bullets shattered the windshield of the wrecked sports car. The black SUV accelerated down Elmwood Avenue, its tires screeching as it disappeared around the corner into the neighborhood traffic.
Panicked shouts rang out down the street as neighbors peeked out from their windows.
"Are you okay?!" Dad shouted, checking my head and arms.
"I'm fine! I'm okay!" I panted, my heart slamming against my ribs. "Dad, what was that?!"
"Cartel enforcement," Dad muttered, his eyes dark with grim realization. "Vance wasn't just stealing pharmaceutical supplies to sell to local clinics. He was supplying precursor compounds to organized distribution networks. And Derek turned your home into their storage depot."
The two officers radioed for immediate backup, calling in a citywide dragnet for the black SUV.
Ten minutes later, the street was blocked off with yellow crime scene tape, swarming with state investigators, federal agents, and tactical response units.
Special Agent Miller walked up to my father and me in my front yard. "Claire, we need to inspect your basement immediately. We’ve brought in a specialized bomb and search squad."
I led Agent Miller, my father, and three armed federal technicians down the narrow wooden stairs into my basement. I had rarely come down here over the past year; Derek had put a heavy padlock on the basement door months ago, claiming he was using it for "woodworking storage" and warned me not to mess with his projects.
One of the agents used heavy bolt cutters to snap the padlock.
We stepped into the damp, concrete-walled room. The basement smelled of old dust and chemical fuel. The technicians moved toward the back wall behind the water heater, using thermal imaging scanners against the drywall.
"Here," an agent said, pointing a red laser line at the concrete frame. "The density behind this panel doesn't match the foundation."
Dad stepped up with a crowbar from his truck, jamming the steel wedge into the seam of the false drywall panel. With a sharp groan of tearing screws, the wall popped open.
Behind it was a custom-built, heavy-duty steel gun safe, anchored directly into the concrete foundation of my house.
"Do you know the combination, Claire?" Agent Miller asked.
"No," I replied, my voice trembling. "I didn't even know this wall existed."
Dad looked closer at the digital keypad on the safe face. "Derek isn't clever with numbers. Try Lily’s birthday."
I stepped forward, my hands shaking as I keyed in six digits: 0-6-1-4-1-8.
The electronic lock chimed green. A heavy mechanical clunk echoed through the small basement.
Dad pulled the thick steel door open.
Inside were not just stacks of hundred-dollar bills.
Stacked floor-to-ceiling inside the reinforced vault were sealed metal cases containing tens of thousands of doses of illicit fentanyl precursors, alongside dozens of fraudulent identity passports bearing Derek’s face—each with different names, offshore bank credentials, and plane tickets to non-extradition countries scheduled for three days from now.
Derek was never planning to stay with me. He was setting me up to take the federal fall while he vanished with millions.
And at the very bottom of the safe lay a thick velvet jewelry box.
I reached out with trembling fingers and opened it. Inside rested my late mother’s gold wedding ring—the one that had disappeared from my bedroom six months ago, the one Derek claimed I had "carelessly lost."
I pulled the ring to my chest, tears finally pouring down my face.
He hadn't just stolen my money. He had tried to steal my memory, my dignity, and my child’s future.
"Agent Miller," Dad said quietly, looking at the mountain of illegal contraband inside my home. "You have everything you need to lock Derek away for the rest of his natural life. But there’s one more thing we need to clear."
May you like
"What’s that, Richard?" Miller asked.
"Patricia," Dad replied, his eyes cold as flint. "She isn't just a bystander in this. She’s the mastermind who set up the shell accounts. And right now, she’s heading for the airport."
