Chapter 9 - THE DAY OF RECKONINGThree months later.

The courtroom at the United States District Court in downtown Columbus was packed to capacity. Reporters from every major local news station sat in the gallery, scribbling feverishly in their notebooks.
Sitting at the defense table in orange institutional jumpsuits, wrist chains, and leg shackles were Derek, Patricia, and Dr. Victor Vance.
Derek looked broken—his hair wild, his face gaunt, his arrogant posture completely destroyed by ninety days in federal remand. Patricia sat beside him, refusing to even look at her son, her hands trembling uncontrollably.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored cream blazer, my hair pulled back neatly. Beside me sat my father, holding my hand, and little Lily, who was drawing quietly in her coloring book.
Judge Eleanor Vance (no relation to the defendant) slammed her heavy wooden gavel onto the bench.
"In the matter of the United States v. Vance, Bennett, and Bennett," Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing off the high wood-paneled walls. "The court has reviewed the federal plea agreements and the extensive forensic evidence presented by the prosecution."
She turned her sharp gaze down to the three defendants at the table.
"What occurred in this case goes beyond simple financial greed," Judge Vance declared sternly. "This was a calculated, predatory campaign of domestic economic abuse, identity theft, and systemic fraud that compromised public safety and endangered the life of a six-year-old child."
She looked directly at Derek.
"Derek Bennett, for your role in the federal conspiracy, forgery, and grand larceny, you are hereby sentenced to twenty-two years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."
Derek collapsed back into his chair, sobbing hysterically into his hands.
"Patricia Bennett," the judge continued, "for masterminding the laundering infrastructure and fraudulent wire transfers, you are sentenced to eighteen years in federal prison."
Patricia closed her eyes, letting out a ragged groan of despair as the court marshals tightened the chains around her waist.
"Furthermore," Judge Vance added, "the court orders total asset forfeiture of all real estate, vehicles, and financial accounts held under Aegis Holdings. Full restitution of $210,000 is to be paid immediately to Claire Bennett, along with sole, unencumbered ownership of the primary residence on Elmwood Avenue."
BANG!
The gavel struck the block.
As the guards pulled Derek and Patricia toward the side doors leading to the holding cells, Derek turned his head toward me one last time.
"Claire!" he sobbed, tears streaming down his face. "Please! Forgive me! Tell Lily I love her! Please!"

I didn't answer. I didn't yell. I simply looked at him with calm, complete indifference, then reached down and took my daughter’s small hand in mine.
He was no longer my storm. He was just noise.
