Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Twist and Unshakeable Legacy

The reaction to the security footage was swift and devastating.

Within two hours, the district attorney revoked Derek’s bail, citing domestic felony assault charges combined with severe financial crimes. He was taken into custody directly from the courthouse steps, screaming curses as the cameras recorded every second of his pathetic downfall. He eventually pleaded guilty to all charges, receiving a sentence of twelve years in federal prison.

Allison signed the divorce papers that very afternoon. She surrendered all rights to the penthouse, packed a single suitcase of her personal belongings, and moved into a small, modest one-bedroom apartment near Asheville, taking a entry-level job at a local library to start rebuilding her life from scratch. I did not give her a trust fund allowance, but I paid for her therapy. For the first time in her life, she was learning to stand on her own feet.

As for Unit 14B at The Pinnacle Towers?

I didn't sell it. Nor did I live in it.

I instructed Arthur Vance to convert the entire 14th floor of the luxury tower into the headquarters for The Margaret & Henry Collins Sanctuary—a fully funded foundation dedicated to providing legal aid, financial protection, and housing for elderly victims of domestic and psychological abuse.

Six months later, I stood on the balcony of the former penthouse, wrapped in a warm wool shawl, looking out over the city. The cold marble floor where I had once collapsed in pain was now covered in plush carpet, surrounded by offices where pro-bono lawyers worked tirelessly to protect vulnerable grandmothers and grandfathers from predatory family members.

Arthur Vance walked out onto the balcony, handing me a fresh cup of tea—brewed perfectly, just the way I liked it.

"The foundation officially opens its doors today, Mrs. Collins," Arthur said with a warm smile. "We already have forty cases on the docket."

"Good," I said, taking a sip of the warm tea. "No one should ever be made to feel worthless in a home they helped build."

Arthur hesitated, then chuckled softly. "Oh, there is one final detail you might find interesting regarding Derek’s legal defense."

I raised an eyebrow. "What's that?"

"When Derek was searching for a defense attorney after his public meltdown, his family couldn't afford top-tier counsel," Arthur said, eyes twinkling with quiet irony. "A private legal aid fund quietly subsidized his defense lawyer—the very lawyer who advised him to plead guilty to all counts to avoid a twenty-year sentence."

I looked at Arthur, a slow, knowing smile spreading across my face. "And who funds that private legal aid organization, Arthur?"

May you like

"Apex Capital, Mrs. Collins," Arthur replied with a gentle bow. "You paid for his lawyer to convince him to surrender."

I turned back to the view, watching the sun rise over Charlotte, casting a warm, golden light over the city. I was seventy years old, my hip still ached when it rained, but I had never felt stronger.
