Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail of Lies

At 10:00 AM, while Allison was out taking a yoga class to escape her miserable reality, a black sedan pulled up to the residential gates of The Pinnacle Towers.

Arthur Vance himself stepped out, accompanied by two men in dark gray suits carrying leather briefcases. I let them into the penthouse using the secondary key access Arthur had brought with him.

"Mrs. Collins," Vance said, bowing his head respectfully. "It is a pleasure to finally meet you in person. Henry spoke of you constantly before his passing."

"Thank you, Arthur," I said, motioning for them to sit at the dining table—the very table Derek insisted on using for his grand displays of power. "What did the financial dive reveal?"

One of the men, a forensic auditor named Miller, opened his laptop. "Mrs. Collins, Derek Vance—no relation to me—has been living a complete lie. He holds a mid-tier managerial role at Sterling Financial. His salary is $110,000 a year. However, his luxury corporate lease for this unit costs $12,000 a month, which his firm subsidizes only because he claimed to be a primary shareholder in a local tech firm."

"Is he?" I asked.

"No," Miller replied grimly. "He forged the financial credentials. Furthermore, we audited his corporate accounts this morning under Apex Group's authority as the primary property owner. Derek has been embezzling client expense funds to cover his personal debts, credit cards, and the lease co-pays for this very condo."

I sat back, absorbing the depth of his deception. Derek wasn't just an abusive bully; he was a desperate fraudster frantically trying to maintain the illusion of wealth while stepping on everyone around him to stay afloat.

"Does Sterling Financial know?" I asked.

"Not yet," Vance said. "Richard Sterling, the CEO, believes Derek is a rising star. In fact, Sterling Financial is currently seeking a $20 million commercial credit line from Apex Capital—your trust."

I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking over the Charlotte skyline. "Richard Sterling is coming here tonight for dinner. Derek wants me to cook for him."

Vance smiled thinly. "How would you like us to handle this, Mrs. Collins?"

"Let him host his dinner," I said, my voice hardening. "Let him put on his little performance. And right when he feels he is at the pinnacle of his success, we will pull the floor out from under him."
