Chapter 7 - The Master Plan

Two police officers arrived twenty minutes later. The luxury penthouse, once Derek's sanctuary of arrogance, was turned into a crime scene of financial fraud and domestic abuse.

As the officers snapped handcuffs around Derek’s wrists, he whipped his head around to face me, his eyes wide with desperate rage.

"You set me up!" he screamed as he was led toward the private elevator. "You planned this! You acted like a feeble old lady just to ruin me!"

"You ruined yourself, Derek," I said calmly, standing tall beside Arthur Vance. "I merely handed you the rope."

When the elevator doors closed, taking Derek down to the police cruiser below, the apartment fell into a quiet stillness. Richard Sterling and his wife offered their deepest apologies and left, leaving only me, Arthur, and Allison in the vast, quiet living room.

Allison was sitting on the sofa, weeping uncontrollably.

"Mom... I'm so sorry," she sobbed, reaching out to grab my hand. "I didn't know... I swear I didn't know he was stealing money or that you owned the building! Please, Mom, you have to help us! They're going to put him in prison!"

I pulled my hand back out of her reach. "You are still worrying about him?"

"He's my husband, Mom!" she cried. "What am I supposed to do? I have nothing! If he goes to prison, I'll be homeless!"

"You won't be homeless, Allison," I said, my voice heavy with disappointment. "Because this condo belongs to me. But you will not be staying here."

Arthur Vance stepped forward and pulled a second, smaller sealed envelope from his coat pocket.

"Mrs. Collins," Arthur said gently. "There is one final document Henry requested I give to Allison in the event that this specific situation occurred."

Allison looked up, wiping her eyes. "Dad? Dad left something for me?"

"Your father knew men like Derek," I said, taking the envelope from Arthur. "He built this trust not just to protect me, but to protect you from fortune hunters. He made me promise that if you ever married someone who treated people with cruelty, I was to hand you this."

I handed her the envelope.
