Chapter 4 - The Uninvited Guest

By 6:30 PM, the smell of roasted tenderloin filled the penthouse. I wore the faded linen apron Derek insisted I wear, my silver hair pulled back into a tight, simple knot.
Derek arrived home early, checking every corner of the condo with a white glove mentality. He inspected the dining table, running a finger along the mahogany surface.
"Acceptable," he muttered. "Where is the wine?"
"It's breathing on the sideboard," I replied calmly.
"Good. When Mr. Sterling arrives, you stay in the kitchen. You bring the food out, clear the plates, and speak only when spoken to. If you spill anything, so help me God, Margaret, I will throw your bags onto the curb tonight."
Allison came down the stairs wearing an expensive velvet dress that looked tight and uncomfortable. She looked like a prisoner being dressed up for an execution. She wouldn't meet my eyes.
At 7:00 PM sharp, the door chime rang.
Derek rushed to open it, his face instantly transforming into a mask of obsequious charm. "Mr. Sterling! Welcome, welcome! Please, come in!"
Richard Sterling, a tall man in his late sixties with silver hair and an authoritative presence, stepped into the foyer. Alongside him was his wife, Eleanor, and... Arthur Vance.
Derek froze when he saw Vance. "Mr. Vance? I didn't know you were joining us."
"Mr. Vance is the senior trustee for Apex Capital, Derek," Sterling explained, taking off his coat. "Since we are finalizing the $20 million expansion deal, I thought it crucial he join us to inspect your setup."
"Of course! An honor!" Derek beamed, practically vibrating with unearned pride. "Please, sit! My wife's family has prepared a splendid meal."
They sat around the grand dining table. Derek took the head of the table, puffing his chest out.
"I'll have the maid bring out the appetizers," Derek said smoothly, signaling toward the kitchen.
I stepped through the double doors carrying a large silver platter containing the roasted beef and garlic crostini. I walked deliberately, taking my time, letting my slight limp show.

Richard Sterling looked up. The moment his eyes fell on my face, his glass of water stopped halfway to his mouth. He blinked, staring at me in absolute shock.
"Margaret?" Sterling gasped.
