Chapter 2 - The Cage of Silk and SteelThe penthouse at the Meridian didn't feel like a home; it felt like an art gallery curated by a predator. Glass walls offered a panoramic view of a bleeding sunset over the Hudson, but Maya couldn't look at the sky. Her eyes were fixed on the doors.

"Put your bag down," a voice commanded from the shadows of the expansive kitchen.
Julian Croft stepped into the amber light, rolling up the sleeves of his cashmere sweater to reveal forearms corded with muscle and pale, deliberate scars. Pip, the Lagotto Romagnolo, trotted at his heels, his curly tail wagging a greeting before curling up on a Persian rug worth more than a suburban house.
"You can't do this," Maya said, her voice shaking with a fragile mixture of fear and fury. She kept her distance, her fingers curling into the straps of her canvas bag. "Buying my building? Tracking my car? That's kidnapping by proxy. I want out."
Julian stopped three paces away. He didn't look angry; he looked intensely, unnervingly curious.
"Kidnapping implies you had somewhere better to be, Maya," he said softly, his voice cutting through the ambient hum of the smart-home system. "You spent last night calculating whether you could afford grocery store eggs or pharmacy eggs. You walk twelve miles a day in slush for minimum wage, while the people whose dogs you walk treat you like furniture."
"At least they're my choices!"
"Are they?" Julian took another step closer, closing the distance with the silent grace of a big cat. "Or are they just the margins society drew for you because no one ever handed you a key worth turning?"
He reached out. Maya flinched, bracing for a grip, but his fingers only brushed a stray lock of hair from her forehead, tucking it behind her ear. His touch was burning hot, impossibly gentle, and entirely inescapable.
May you like
"Pip doesn't like strangers," Julian murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips before locking back onto her wide eyes. "He liked you instantly. Dogs have better instincts than men. They know when someone belongs in the pack."
Hook: That night, locked in a guest suite lined with silk wallpaper and guarded by a silent digital lock, Maya found a black velvet box on the vanity. Inside wasn't jewelry. It was a signed employment contract designating her as the Meridian’s 'Head of Canine Acquisitions' with a salary of half a million dollars—and a clause on the final page stating she could never leave Manhattan without Julian's written consent.
