Chapter 6 - The Confession in the DarkThe bodies were gone before dawn, cleared away by a cleaning crew that moved like ghosts. The shattered glass had been replaced by emergency panes, and the penthouse smelled once again of lemon polish and rain.

Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, a glass of amber whiskey in his hand, staring out at the awakening city. His shirt was once again immaculate, buttoned to the throat, but the strain around his eyes was visible.

Maya sat on the edge of the velvet sofa, her hands still trembling from the adrenaline crash. The pistol lay on the coffee table between them like a sleeping snake.

"You killed a man tonight," Julian said softly, without turning around.

"I saved a life," Maya countered, her voice shaking but resolute. "Just like you saved mine by buying my building. We're even now, Julian. Let me go."

Julian turned slowly. He walked across the room, knelt down in front of her just as he had in the park weeks ago, and placed his whiskey glass on the table. He reached out and gently took her trembling hands in his.

"You think this is a debt ledger?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a low, intense register. "You think I pulled you out of that studio apartment because I needed a pet, or because I felt a debt of gratitude for Pip?"

"Then why?" Maya whispered, tears stinging her eyes. "Why me?"

"Because for ten years, I have lived in a world of wolves," Julian said, his thumb tracing the line of her knuckles. "Every person around me was a rival, a traitor, or a corpse waiting to happen. And then you walked into my lobby with my dog—unimpressed, exhausted, and carrying the quiet dignity of someone who refuses to break no matter how hard the world grinds her down."

He leaned in closer, his breath warm against her skin. "I didn't cage you, Maya. I pulled you into the only safe place left in my world. Because the moment I saw you in that park, I knew if I didn't keep you with me, I would burn this entire city to the ground just to find you again."

Hook: Maya didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned forward, her lips brushing his ear as she whispered, "If I stay... you answer to me, too." Julian’s eyes flared with a dark, hungry fire, and he kissed her—not with the gentleness of a savior, but with the desperate, consuming hunger of a man claiming his final sanctuary.
