Chapter 8 - The Price of the ThroneThe sea breeze whipped through the skeletal steel beams of the dry dock as Julian and Maya stepped out of the Aston Martin. Pip remained safely locked in the penthouse, but the tension in the air was thick enough to choke on.

Donato Moretti stepped forward from the circle of enforcers, a silver-headed cane tapping rhythmically against the concrete. His face was a map of old scars and ancient malice.

"Croft," Moretti rasped, his voice like grinding stones. "You've grown soft in your glass tower. Bringing a little stray dog walker to a syndicate meeting? Have you lost your mind?"

"Keep her name out of your mouth, Donato," Julian said, his voice dangerously low, his right hand resting casually inside his coat pocket near his weapon.

"She’s a liability!" Moretti shouted, raising his hand. Behind him, two enforcers shoved a bound, gagged figure forward—the property manager who had sold Maya's building to Julian. "This rat told us everything. He told us how you bought her lease, how you tracked her phone, how you're obsessed with a girl who doesn't even know how to use a real weapon."

Moretti pulled a small, heavy black box from his pocket—a dead-man’s switch wired to explosives planted in the foundation of the Meridian penthouse.

"Hand over your territories in Manhattan, Croft, or I press the button and turn your glass castle into a tomb with your precious pet inside it."

The silence that followed was absolute. Julian’s face went completely blank—the mask of the chess master descending, calculating odds, measuring variables, looking for an escape that didn't exist.

Maya watched him. She saw the microscopic shift in his weight. She saw the trap closing around him.

And then, she smiled.

"Julian," she called out softly, stepping out from his shadow.

Moretti laughed, a dry, rattling sound. "Quiet, little girl, the adults are—"

Bang.

The shot didn't come from Julian. It came from the passenger seat of the Aston Martin behind them, where Maya had covertly slipped the suppressed backup pistol through the cracked window minutes before stepping out.

The bullet shattered Moretti’s walking cane into splinters, startling the old don into dropping the dead-man’s switch.

Hook: Before Moretti could scream, Julian moved with the speed of a striking cobra. He vaulted across the hood of the car, tackled Moretti to the concrete, and pressed his pistol straight between the old man's eyes, while Maya stepped forward, calmly retrieving the fallen detonator from the ground with a steady, unbreakable hand.
