Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the MirrorThe suture held. For three days, Julian convalesced in the master suite, and Maya became his silent warden, changing his dressings, feeding him broth, and watching the ironclad dictator reduced to human fragility.

Yet, even feverish and pale, Julian’s mind was a tactical labyrinth.
"The man who did this," Maya said on the fourth night, setting a glass of water on his bedside table. "Your rivals? The Moretti family?"
Julian opened his eyes, dark and sharp as obsidian. "Moretti is a footnote. A dog snapping at the heels of a wolf. The real threat isn't outside these walls, Maya. It's the fact that I brought a civilian into the war room."
"I'm not a civilian anymore," she said quietly, surprising herself. She looked down at her hands, still faintly stained with the memory of his blood. "You made sure of that."
A slow, dangerous smile curved Julian’s mouth. "Good girl."
The peace was shattered at midnight.
The penthouse alarms didn't sound with a loud, blaring siren; instead, all the smart-glass windows instantly frosted over, turning pitch black as the security system locked down into a localized Faraday cage. The ambient lighting shifted from warm amber to a harsh, pulsing crimson.
"Intruders," Julian muttered, sliding out of bed with fluid, silent lethal grace, completely ignoring the stitches pulling at his chest. He reached into the bedside console and pulled out a suppressed Sig Sauer P226.
"Where do we hide?" Maya whispered, panic seizing her throat.

"We don't," Julian said, grabbing her hand with a grip that left no room for argument. "We hunt."
Hook: As footsteps echoed up the private service stairs—footsteps belonging to men carrying automatic weapons—Julian shoved Maya behind a massive marble pillar, handed her a smaller backup pistol she didn't know how to fire, and whispered, "If they get past me, aim for the center of mass and pull straight back. Welcome to your first lesson in survival."
