CHAPTER 1 — The Flowers No One Expected

The motorcycles arrived like rolling thunder.

The peaceful suburban neighborhood shook as dozens of chrome-covered Harley motorcycles turned onto Maple Street.

Neighbors immediately peeked through curtains.

Parents hurried children back inside.

Store owners paused in their doorways.

Everyone knew exactly who they were.

The Iron Wolves Motorcycle Club.

And leading them...

Tank.

Six-foot-six.

Broad shoulders.

Scarred hands.

Gray beard.

Cold blue eyes that looked as though they hadn't smiled in decades.

People whispered terrible stories about him.

Some claimed he had survived wars overseas.

Others believed he once spent years in prison.

Nobody knew which stories were true.

Nobody was brave enough to ask.

Where Tank went...

Silence followed.

The motorcycles finally stopped outside an old brick church.

Engines rumbled.

Leather vests creaked.

Heavy boots struck the pavement.

Not a single biker laughed.

They weren't there for a celebration.

Every year, on this exact day, the club gathered before riding somewhere no one else was invited to follow.

No one understood why.

Then...

A tiny squeak echoed across the street.

One little wheelchair rolled slowly out of a nearby driveway.

Five-year-old Emma wore a faded yellow dress covered with tiny embroidered daisies.

Her legs rested beneath a soft blue blanket.

In her lap sat a crooked bouquet of wildflowers tied together with pink ribbon.

She smiled as though she had wandered into the safest place in the world.

One biker immediately noticed her.

"Sweetheart... stop!"

Another stepped forward.

"You shouldn't come over here."

Emma simply kept rolling.

"I need the big man."

The conversation around the motorcycles died instantly.

Every biker turned toward Tank.

Tank looked up.

For the first time all morning...

His expression changed.

Emma stopped directly in front of him.

She lifted the flowers with both tiny hands.

"These are for you."

Tank frowned.

"For me?"

She nodded.

"My daddy says flowers help sad people."

The street became completely silent.

Tank had heard thousands of insults.

Monster.

Criminal.

Murderer.

But no one had ever called him...

Sad.

Slowly...

The giant biker lowered himself onto one knee.

The leather in his vest groaned as he bent.

His rough voice barely escaped his throat.

"Why would you think I'm sad?"

Emma answered without hesitation.

"Because your eyes are crying even when your face isn't."

Several bikers quietly looked away.

Tank's jaw tightened.

His hand reached toward the flowers...

But stopped halfway.

It was shaking.

Before he could answer...

Emma looked behind him toward the church cemetery.

Then softly asked,

"Are you visiting your little girl too?"

Tank froze.

Every biker stopped breathing.

No one...

Not one single person...

May you like

Had ever spoken those words aloud.
