CHAPTER 2 — The Grave Hidden Behind the Leather Vest

Nobody moved.

Tank stared at Emma as if time itself had stopped.

Finally he whispered,

"Who told you that?"

Emma blinked innocently.

"No one."

She pointed toward the cemetery gate.

"She did."

Every head slowly turned.

There was no little girl.

Only rows of weathered gravestones swaying beneath old oak trees.

One biker crossed himself.

Another swallowed hard.

Emma looked confused.

"You can't see her?"

Tank stood so suddenly his motorcycle tipped slightly.

His breathing became uneven.

Nearly twenty years earlier...

Tank had buried his only daughter.

Lily.

She had been five years old.

The exact same age as Emma.

A drunk driver had taken her life only two weeks before her sixth birthday.

Tank never recovered.

His marriage collapsed.

His business disappeared.

His friends vanished.

Only the Iron Wolves remained beside him.

Every single year...

On Lily's birthday...

The bikers rode together to visit her grave.

Not because Tank asked.

Because none of them wanted him to mourn alone.

Emma quietly rolled closer.

"I think she's happy today."

Tank's eyes filled.

"How could you know that?"

Emma smiled.

"Because she likes your friends."

Several enormous bikers suddenly wiped tears from beneath dark sunglasses.

Tank carefully accepted the flowers.

The first gift anyone had ever given him at Lily's grave.

But before anyone could speak...

Emma began coughing.

Hard.

Violently.

Her tiny body bent forward.

Her mother ran across the street in panic.

"Emma!"

She wrapped her daughter in trembling arms.

"I'm so sorry! She wandered away! Please forgive us!"

Tank gently shook his head.

"No."

His eyes stayed on Emma.

"Thank you."

The mother hesitated.

Then quietly confessed something that shocked everyone.

"We almost couldn't afford her wheelchair."

Silence.

Hospital bills.

Surgeries.

Treatments.

Everything had consumed their savings.

Emma's father worked two jobs.

Still...

It wasn't enough.

Tank slowly looked toward his club.

Without saying a word...

Every biker already understood.

One by one...

Leather wallets came out.

Cash.

Checks.

Credit cards.

Wedding rings.

Anything they had.

The pile on the church steps grew larger every second.

The frightened neighbors watched from across the street in complete disbelief.

The men they feared most...

Were quietly trying to save one little girl.

Then Tank removed something no one had ever seen before.

A faded silver necklace.

Inside was Lily's tiny childhood photograph.

He carefully placed it into Emma's hand.

"If she were alive..."

His voice broke.

"...she'd want you to have this."

Emma hugged him.

The toughest man in town...

Could no longer stop crying.

But the greatest surprise...

May you like

Hadn't happened yet.
