Chapter 10 - Epilogue — The Final Balance SheetThree years later.

Federal Correctional Facility, Oxford, Wisconsin.

The visitors' room was cold, sterile, and smelled faintly of industrial disinfectant and stale floor wax.

Grant Mercer sat at one of the bolted metal tables, staring blankly at his hands. The gray institutional jumpsuit hung even looser on his frame now; the stress and despair of prison life had hollowed out his cheeks and silvered the temples of his hair. He looked fifty years older than the man who had swaggered into the Winnetka estate with an expensive bottle of champagne and a twenty-six-year-old secretary.

The heavy metal door at the end of the room buzzed open.

A guard escorted a visitor toward Table 4.

Grant looked up, expecting a court-appointed social worker or perhaps a delayed legal notice.

Instead, standing before him was me.

I wore a sharp, charcoal-gray trench coat, dark sunglasses, and a tailored expression of utter neutrality. I didn't smile. I didn't sneer. I simply sat down across from him on the hard plastic chair.

Grant’s breath hitched. He shrank back slightly, his eyes wide with a mixture of profound shame and lingering terror.

"Claire..." he whispered, his voice cracked and ragged. "What... what are you doing here?"

I slowly placed a single manila envelope onto the metal table and pushed it across the scarred surface toward him.

Grant stared at it, his hands trembling as he reached out and lifted the flap. Inside was a single, official legal document bearing the embossed seal of the Circuit Court of Cook County.

Decree of Absolute Dissolution of Marriage.

"It was finalized this morning," I said quietly, my voice cutting through the hum of the fluorescent lights. "The last remaining administrative ties between our names have been legally dissolved."

Grant looked down at the paper, a single tear spilling over his lower eyelid and tracking down his hollow cheek.

"I lost everything, Claire," he choked out, his voice breaking into a pathetic sob. "I lost my career, my reputation, my freedom... Tessa left me the week I was indicted. I have nothing left in this world."

I leaned forward slightly, resting my elbows on the metal table, looking directly into his ruined eyes.

"You didn't lose everything, Grant," I said softly.

He looked up, a faint, desperate spark of hope flickering in his chest. "I didn't?"

"No," I replied, my voice as cold and clear as winter glass. "You finally achieved your true net worth. You're exactly what you always were."

Grant flinched as if struck by a physical blow.

I stood up smoothly, buttoned my trench coat, and turned toward the exit without looking back.

Behind me, in the silent, echoing visiting room, the man who once thought he ruled an empire buried his face in his hands and wept.
