Chapter 5 - The FreefallBy Tuesday afternoon, Grant Mercer’s reality had completely disintegrated.

With his corporate badges deactivated, his black cards permanently declined, and his name flagged across every major financial institution in Chicago, Grant discovered how quickly the corporate world abandons a drowning man.

He had tried calling his closest allies on the Whitmore Commercial board—men like Henderson—only to find his calls going straight to voicemail. Henderson and the other junior VPs had already submitted written affidavits to Marcus Vance detailing how Grant had pressured them into signing off on altered ledger entries, saving their own skins by throwing their former boss under the bus.

Grant and Tessa had been forced to pack their belongings into cheap plastic bins and relocate to a cramped, outdated one-bedroom apartment on the far north side—the very apartment Tessa had lived in before she latched onto Grant's lifestyle.

Inside the cramped kitchen, the smell of cheap instant coffee hung heavy in the air.

Tessa slammed a ceramic mug onto the laminate counter, her face flushed with fury.

"What do you mean, your personal accounts are frozen too?" Tessa shrieked, glaring at Grant as he paced frantically across the linoleum floor. "You told me you had millions stashed in private offshore holdings!"

"I did!" Grant shouted back, his hair disheveled, his Brioni suit wrinkled from sleeping on a lumpy sofa bed. "The primary accounts were tied to my corporate tax ID! When Whitmore’s legal team flagged the embezzlement, the IRS and federal banking regulators slapped a freezing order on every asset linked to my social security number!"

"So we're broke?" Tessa's voice rose to a hysterical pitch, her hands flying to her swollen stomach. "I am four months pregnant, living in a shoebox, and you're broke? You promised me the Winnetka estate! You promised me a Mercedes! You told me Claire was a useless parasite!"

Grant stopped pacing, his face twisting in a mix of humiliation and pure venom.

"Shut up, Tessa! This is all your fault! If you hadn't demanded we move into the house, if you hadn't pushed me to corner her—"

"My fault?" Tessa laughed harshly, her eyes narrowing with sudden, lethal hatred. "I was an executive secretary at a top firm before you filled my head with lies about your 'empire'! You told me you ran Whitmore! You told me Claire was just a kept woman living off your charity! You're not a CEO, Grant. You're a pathetic fraud who got caught stealing from his wife!"

Grant raised a hand, his face contorting in rage, but before he could move, a sharp knock rattled the apartment door.

Grant froze. Tessa backed away.

Slowly, Grant walked to the door and pulled it open.

Standing in the dim, flickering hallway were two federal marshals in tactical vests, holding a formal summons.

"Grant Mercer?" the lead marshal asked.

"Yes..." Grant whispered.

"You are hereby summoned to appear before the U.S. District Court of Northern Illinois on Thursday morning at 9:00 AM to face federal charges of corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and securities tampering."

The marshal handed the paperwork to Grant's shaking hands, turned on his heel, and walked away.

Grant stared at the white paper, the terrifying weight of his new reality finally crushing down upon him. He wasn't just losing his wealth; he was looking at ten years in federal prison.
