Chapter 4 - The Queen ReturnsI walked out through the heavy double doors of the Winnetka estate, wearing a tailored winter-white wool coat, sunglasses hiding my eyes, and my heels clicking rhythmically against the stone steps.

Behind me walked two professional movers carrying large industrial bins.

Grant turned around slowly, his mouth parting in a silent, horrified gasp.

"Claire..." he choked out, taking a step forward. "What is this? What have you done? Tell these men to get off my property—"

"Your property?" I stopped three steps above him, looking down through my sunglasses. "Grant, darling. Let's get one thing straight. You said it yourself on Saturday night: everything around us exists because someone built it."

Grant's eyes widened in sheer terror as the words echoed back to him.

"My father built the foundation," I continued, my voice cold and steady. "I hold the deeds, the trusts, and the majority equity. You were merely an employee with an inflated ego and an unfortunate habit of stealing from the company checkbook."

From the open second-story window above us, a shriek shattered the morning quiet.

Tessa Lane leaned out of the master bedroom window, wrapped in my silk robe, her face pale with panic.

"Grant! What's happening? The water in the master bath just got shut off, and my credit cards are all declining at Saks!"

Grant looked up at her, then back at me, his hands trembling violently. "Claire, listen to me. It was a mistake. Tessa... Tessa meant nothing. It was a lapse in judgment. We can fix this! We can go inside, we can talk—"

"Talk?" I tilted my head. "About what? About how useless I am without your money? About how I'm supposed to be your nanny?"

I turned to Marcus. "Is the forensic team inside?"

"Sweeping every room, Ms. Whitmore," Marcus replied. "Any personal items belonging to Ms. Lane have been packed into contractor bags and placed at the edge of the driveway."

"No!" Grant lunged forward, but the two security guards intercepted him instantly, pinning his arms behind his back with practiced efficiency. "You can't do this! I have rights! I'm your husband!"

"Not for much longer," I said, pulling a single document from my coat pocket and letting it flutter down to land at his polished shoes. "That’s the expedited divorce filing based on adultery and financial malfeasance. You’ll be served with the remaining papers by noon."

I stepped past him, walking toward the Maybach idling at the curb.

As I reached for the door, Grant screamed out a final, pathetic plea that echoed across the entire lakefront.

"CLAIRE! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! I MADE YOU!"

May you like

I paused, looking back over my shoulder one last time.

"No, Grant," I said softly. "You just taught me how to take it all back."
