Chapter 11 - The Second Footprint

The young man at the park entrance didn't look up until I was standing two feet away from him. His fingers were shoved deep into the pockets of a frayed denim jacket, his teeth chattering against the biting January wind. Beneath his worn sneakers, his socks were damp, graying at the heels from the melting slush.
"Excuse me," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the morning air.
He flinched, stepping back with a defensive squint. "I’m not bothering anyone. I was just... I slept by the pond."
"I know," I replied, kneeling without hesitation in the damp grass. I reached down for the zipper of my right boot. "You dropped this coin by the bench, didn't you?"
I held out the silver token I had found in the snow.
His eyes widened. He looked at the coin, then at my face, and finally down at the expensive leather boot I was unlacing. A slow, trembling disbelief washed over his features. "Wait... you're Claudia Wellington? I saw your picture on the financial wire at the public library downtown. You're... you own half the city's real estate funds."
"Right now, I'm just a woman with two warm boots and an extra pair of wool socks," I said, sliding the boot off my foot and setting it neatly in the snow before him. "And you look like you need them a lot more than I do."
Marcus walked up quietly behind me, stepping into the crisp morning light. Instead of looking exasperated, he unzipped his own heavy overcoat, pulled off his cashmere scarf, and draped it around the young man’s shoulders.

"My name is Julian," the young man choked out, a tear carving a warm track through the dust on his cheek as he slipped his frozen foot into my boot. "I... I lost my tech startup last month. My partners locked me out of the servers, my landlord threw my things on the curb, and I thought—I honestly thought nobody in this city even knew I was breathing."
"We see you, Julian," Marcus said, placing a steady hand on the young man's shoulder. "And as it happens, Wellington Industries’ software division is looking for a lead systems architect who knows how to spot bad code. Are you ready to go to work on Monday?"
