Chapter 18 - The Inheritance of the Heart

The late afternoon sun cast a golden glow over the grand library of our Newport estate as Marcus and I sat by the open French doors, listening to the distant crash of the Atlantic waves against the rocky shore.

A thick legal portfolio lay open on the coffee table between us.

"It's official," Marcus said, signing his name to the final document with a steady stroke of his pen. "The entire Wellington-Collier Foundation has been permanently endowed. It’s fully protected, self-sustaining, and legally bound to serve community healthcare and emergency shelter initiatives in perpetuity."

I looked down at the signatures on the parchment. My name—Claudia Wellington—was inscribed right alongside his, permanent and unshakeable.

"Do you ever think about that night in the park?" I asked quietly, leaning my head against his shoulder. "If I had walked past you... if I had kept my boots on and gone home to my empty house?"

Marcus turned, wrapped his arms gently around me, and kissed the top of my head.

"If you had walked past, Claudia, I would have kept sitting on that bench until I found someone else who possessed the one thing money can't buy," he murmured. "Empathy. Genuine, uncalculated human kindness."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his own silver coin, placing it on the table right next to mine. The two tokens clicked softly against the wood, catching the last rays of the summer sun.

"What do we do next?" I smiled, looking up into his blue eyes.

"Next?" Marcus grinned, standing up and offering me his hand. "We have a foundation to run, a city to heal, and about fifty miles of coastline to walk—in whatever shoes we damn well please."
