Chapter 8 - THE LIQUIDATIONThe auction of the Connecticut estate took place on a crisp Saturday morning exactly two weeks later.

Luxury cars lined the driveway as prospective buyers, real estate moguls, and curious onlookers milled through the grand foyer, eyeing the designer furniture, expensive artwork, and crystal chandeliers that had once defined my gilded cage.
I stood on the back patio overlooking the manicured gardens, holding a clipboard containing the final asset liquidation inventory.
A shadow fell over the stone paving behind me. I turned to see Ethan walking toward me, holding two paper cups of coffee.
"The master bedroom sold for twenty percent over asking," Ethan said, offering me a cup.
"Not surprising," I replied, taking it with a small smile. "People love buying other people's ruined dreams at a discount."
Ethan chuckled softly, leaning against the stone balustrade beside me. "The federal prosecutors called this morning. Julian’s defense attorneys tried to cut a plea deal, offering to return the Cayman accounts if the wire fraud charges were dropped."
"And?"
"The prosecutor laughed them out of the room," Ethan said, a satisfied grin touching his lips. "With the digital audit you provided, they have him dead to rights on twenty-four counts of felony embezzlement and tax evasion. He’s looking at twenty years minimum. No parole."
"And Sienna?"
"Her family's lawyers abandoned her yesterday. She’s facing accessory charges and perjury. She’s realizing right now what happens when you spend your life clinging to a man who only cares about himself."
I took a sip of the coffee, letting the warmth spread through me. The wind caught my hair, feeling lighter, freer than it had in years.
"What are you going to do next, Ethan?" I asked quietly.
He looked out over the lawn, thoughtful for a moment. "I'm selling my truck, moving out of the state, and starting my own construction firm—legitimately this time, with honest contracts and no middlemen. And you?"
I looked down at the clipboard in my hand, then out toward the horizon where the sun was breaking brightly through the clouds.

"I'm opening a forensic accounting and legal consultancy firm," I said, a confident smile playing on my lips. "Turns out, I have a real talent for finding hidden assets and exposing men who think their wives aren't paying attention."
Ethan laughed out loud—a genuine, booming sound that chased away the last lingering ghosts of our shared nightmare.
