Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW OF CHICAGOThe flight touched down at a private airfield outside Chicago under a pitch-black sky. The wheels screeched against the tarmac, but inside the cabin, the heavy silence was deafening. Matteo stood over me, his broad frame blocking out the overhead light. His eyes, usually cold and unreadable, held a fierce intensity that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Who killed them?" I whispered, my voice trembling as my baby—his baby, tiny Sophia—clutched tightly at my shirt. "You told me my husband died in a car accident. You told me my twin boys..."
"What the authorities told you was a lie, Elena," Matteo said, his voice dropping to a gravelly tone. "Your husband, Mark, was an undercover forensic accountant for the Department of Justice. He wasn't just working on any case. He uncovered a dirty money trail leading directly into the highest offices of the Global Syndicate—and someone inside his own agency sold him out."
My breath hitched. For three months, I had lived in a haze of grief, believing a sudden brake failure had stolen my family. Now, the ground beneath me dissolved into nothing.
"And my boys?" I gasped, tears pooling in my eyes.
"They were collateral damage to ensure Mark’s silence," Matteo said coldly. "The hit was ordered by a man known only as 'The Architect'—the shadowy head of the rival Vane Syndicate. And the traitor inside the DOJ just gave The Architect your current location."
Before I could digest the horror, the cabin doors hissed open. The chilly midnight air rushed in, accompanied by the smell of jet fuel and rain. Matteo grabbed a dark tactical coat, wrapping it securely around my shoulders, covering both me and the sleeping infant against my chest.
"We move now," he commanded.
Four heavily armed bodyguards surrounded us in a diamond formation as we descended the airstairs. The tarmac was slick with rain, reflecting the dim perimeter lights. Across the runway, three black, armored SUVs waited with their engines idling softly.
Suddenly, a sharp crack echoed across the airfield.
A red laser dot flashed against Matteo’s chest.
"SNIPER!" shouted Lev, Matteo’s head of security, shoving us toward the middle vehicle just as a bullet shattered the concrete inches from my boot.
Chaos erupted. Muzzle flashes illuminated the darkness like violent lightning strikes. Gunfire roared, echoing off the nearby hangars. Matteo grabbed my waist, physically lifting me off my feet and shielding my body with his own as more bullets hit the side of the armored SUV with deafening metallic thuds.
"Get in! Get in now!" Matteo growled, slamming the heavy armored door behind us.
The driver slammed his foot on the accelerator. The tires squealed violently as the SUV lurched forward, crashing through the chain-link perimeter fence. Behind us, one of Matteo's escort vehicles burst into a massive fireball, lighting up the dark night sky.

I pulled Sophia closer to my chest, weeping silently as the baby began to cry once more. Matteo sat beside me, racking the slide of a heavy handgun, his dark eyes locked on mine through the shadows of the speeding car.
"I promised I would protect you, Elena," Matteo said, his voice deadly calm despite the chaos outside. "And Matteo Volkov never breaks a promise."
