Chapter 2 - SECRETS IN THE SAFEHOUSEThe SUV tore through the quiet backroads of rural Illinois, leaving the burning airfield far behind. We arrived at a secluded estate tucked deep within an isolated forest, hidden behind high concrete walls topped with razor wire and surveillance cameras.

The interior of the safehouse was grand yet sterile. Steel shutters slammed down over all the windows the moment we stepped inside, sealing us off from the outside world.
Matteo gently guided me into a private suite, calling for a medical team to check on his daughter. A female physician swiftly examined baby Sophia, confirming that the feeding on the plane had stabilized her blood sugar levels.
"She’s out of danger for now, Mr. Volkov," the doctor reported. "She needs rest, care, and steady nutrition. She’s taken a liking to Mrs. Rossi."
Matteo nodded, dismissing the doctor with a silent gesture. He turned to face me. He had removed his blood-spattered jacket, rolling up the sleeves of his crisp white shirt to reveal dark, intricate tattoos creeping up his forearms.
"Why are you helping me, Matteo?" I asked, looking directly into his dark eyes. "You’re a mafia boss. The world calls you a monster. Why do you care about a grieving widow?"
Matteo walked over to a wet bar, pouring two fingers of dark amber whiskey. He didn't drink it. He just held the glass, staring down into the liquid.
"My wife died giving birth to Sophia three weeks ago," he revealed quietly, his voice carrying a weight of unbearable grief. "Her heart failed. My enemies knew I was vulnerable. They poisoned Sophia’s formula while we were in transit across Europe, attempting to force me into a trade—my empire for her life. I couldn't find a donor. She was dying in my arms until you stepped forward on that jet."
He looked up, his gaze locking onto mine with unsettling intensity.
"You saved my daughter's life, Elena. In my world, that makes your blood as sacred as mine. But there is something else you need to know about your husband."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "What about Mark?"
Matteo pulled an encrypted leather binder from his suit pocket and tossed it onto the coffee table between us.
"Mark didn't just hide evidence against The Architect," Matteo said chillingly. "Before he was killed, he deposited a master decryption key into a blind trust account. The key opens the financial vault containing the identities of every corrupt politician, judge, and syndicate leader in North America."
I stared at the binder in disbelief. "What does that have to do with me?"
"The trust account is tied to a biological security code," Matteo explained, stepping closer. "It requires the retinal print and voice biometric of Mark Rossi’s legal surviving heir."
My breath caught in my throat. "I don't have those codes!"
"No," Matteo whispered darkly. "But your sons did. And according to the intelligence report I received five minutes ago... only one body was recovered from your husband's crashed car three months ago."

My world spun violently. "What... what are you saying?"
"Elena," Matteo said, grabbing my shoulders tightly. "Your twin sons might still be alive."
