Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a GhostThe fluorescent lights of St. Catherine’s Maternity Center buzzed with the sound of a dying insect.

Daniel stood frozen in Room 428, his chest heaving as if he had just sprinted through a blizzard. In his palm, the Polaroid photograph felt heavy, almost radioactive. The sepia-toned edges were slightly faded, but the faces were etched into eternity with absolute clarity.
Valerie at twenty-two.
Young, hollow-eyed, her fingers curled protectively around a bundle wrapped in a hospital blanket.
"Where did you get this?" Daniel’s voice cracked, raw and unrecognisable. He looked away from the photograph to find Valerie staring at him, her eyes wide with a terror that seemed to span two decades.
"I didn't find it," Valerie whispered, her voice trembling as she clutched the yellow envelope closer to her collarbone. "It was slid under the door of my art studio three nights ago. With no return address. Just my name written in block letters."
Across the sterile room, Daniel’s father, Robert Mercer, let out a ragged gasp. The heart monitor beside his bed accelerated from a steady beep to a frantic, staccato rhythm. A red warning light flashed above the doorframe.
"Dad!" Daniel’s sister, Clara, screamed, lunging forward to press the nurse’s call button. "Nurse! We need help in here right now!"
For a terrifying minute, the room dissolved into chaos. Two nurses and a resident physician rushed through the door, shouting medical jargon, adjusting intravenous drips, and shoving Daniel and Valerie back against the wall. Daniel gripped the photograph tighter, his knuckles turning chalk-white.
As the medical team stabilized his father, Daniel looked past them at Valerie. Twenty years of silence, bitterness, and recrimination vanished, replaced by a terrifying, burning realization.
The child they had mourned. The empty crib they had stared at in the dark. The anniversary flowers they bought every November for a ghost.
It was all a lie.
"Valerie," Daniel said, stepping toward her through the clutter of medical equipment. "Twenty years ago... when they told us he didn't make it... who was the doctor? Do you remember his name?"
Valerie closed her eyes, tears spilling over her lashes. "Dr. Aris Thorne. He was the chief obstetrician on duty that night. He was the one who came out of the operating room and told us our son's heart stopped beating during the emergency C-section."
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
Dr. Aris Thorne.
The name sounded like a death sentence. Thorne hadn't just been a doctor at St. Catherine’s; he had been a prominent, untouchable fixture in Chicago’s medical elite until he retired abruptly five years ago and vanished from public life.

And right then, as the heart monitor settled back into a rhythmic hum, Daniel knew exactly what he had to do. He looked at Valerie—his ex-wife, the woman he had abandoned for a corporate climber who never truly loved him—and made a silent vow.
They were going to find their son. No matter who had to pay for it.
