Chapter 6 - The Architect of the BetrayalDaniel stood up slowly, shielding Valerie and Lucas behind him.

"Sophia," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "What are you doing here?"

Sophia took a slow sip of her scotch, her eyes locking onto Lucas with a look of pure, unadulterated calculation.

"I tracked your phone, Daniel," Sophia said calmly, setting her glass down on a nearby conference table. "When you rushed out of the hospital like a madman with that old photograph, I knew you were chasing ghosts. But I didn't realize you were going to drag a random employee into your collective delusion."

"Delusion?" Valerie stood up, her eyes flashing with fury. "We have Dr. Thorne's confession, the hospital archives, and the birthmark on his neck! He is our son, Sophia! And you look like you already knew about it."

Sophia let out a short, cold laugh.

"Me? Valerie, please. Give me some credit. Do you really think I would waste five years of my life marrying a man whose heart belonged to a dead baby and an ex-wife if I didn't do my homework?"

Daniel’s blood turned to ice water. "What did you just say?"

Sophia smiled—a terrifying, predatory smile that revealed the true depth of her ambition.

"Three years ago, when you were looking to expand your firm and interviewing top architectural graduates from Northwestern, I was the one who reviewed the initial resume pile, Daniel. I saw the name. I saw the birth date. I saw the adoption registry notes that Dr. Thorne carelessly left in an unencrypted digital database he sold off during his retirement."

Lucas stared at Sophia, his voice shaking. "You... you knew who I was when you hired me?"

"Of course I did, sweetie," Sophia said smoothly. "I brought you into this firm on purpose. I figured if Daniel ever found out the truth—if that old doctor's guilty conscience ever made him talk—having your long-lost son working right under our noses would be the ultimate insurance policy. A quiet little secret kept safely inside the family."

"You sick, manipulative bitch," Daniel roared, lunging forward.

Before Daniel could reach her, Sophia reached into her designer handbag, pulled out a heavy silver flash drive, and tossed it across the floor toward the shredder beside the desk.

"Go ahead, Daniel! Hit me!" Sophia yelled, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "Beat me up! But just remember—that flash drive contains the full financial wire transfer records proving that your current company accounts were used five years ago to pay off Dr. Thorne's offshore medical debt to keep this entire adoption secret buried forever!"

Daniel froze mid-step.

"What?" Daniel whispered. "What did you say?"

Sophia smirked, stepping backward toward the elevator. "That’s right, darling. When Thorne threatened to expose the illegal adoption scandal five years ago—right around the time you and I got married—I was the one who paid him off using corporate funds to protect our lifestyle. If the authorities find out, you are the one who authorized the hush money. You’re going down for child trafficking, Daniel. Not me."
