Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Three months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over the courtyard of the Querétaro private medical center.
The heavy, suffocating weight that had once hung over our household was gone, replaced by an atmosphere of radiant, hard-won peace. Chloe walked across the garden path, her hair beginning to grow back in soft, dark curls after her final successful round of treatment. The malignant mass was gone—completely eradicated by aggressive medical intervention and the unwavering care she deserved from day one.
David was currently residing in a federal detention facility in Querétaro, awaiting trial on multiple felony counts of corporate fraud, asset misappropriation, and child endangerment. Claudia Morales had been extradited from Guadalajara to face conspiracy charges related to the San Lucas Holdings shell network.
And the commercial property that had funded their illicit shadow life? It was now legally transferred entirely into Chloe’s name, placed in a secure educational trust managed by Alejandro Garza to guarantee her college tuition and medical security for the rest of her life.
We sat together at a small wrought-iron table in the hospital courtyard, sharing a basket of fresh pastries and warm hot chocolate.
"Mom," Chloe said, looking up from her pastry with a bright, genuine smile that reached all the way to her eyes. "Do you think we'll ever move back to the old house?"
I took a sip of my coffee, looking out over the blooming jacaranda trees that lined the boulevard. The old house held too many ghosts—too many years of walking on eggshells, keeping secrets to avoid someone else's temper, and pretending everything was fine when our world was quietly falling apart.
"No, sweetheart," I smiled, reaching across the table to squeeze her hand. "We aren't moving back. I sold that house last week. We’re moving into a bright, beautiful apartment downtown—right near the park, where you can walk to school and never, ever have to look over your shoulder again."
Chloe squeezed my hand back, her grip strong and confident.
May you like
"Good," she whispered, her voice clear and completely unafraid. "Because I’m tired of hiding."
"Me too, my love," I replied, raising my cup in a quiet toast to the brilliant, unbroken future stretching out before us. "Me too."
